Bionic Implants and Spectrum Clash

From the sound of it, prosthetic designers and engineers are planning devices that operate on single frequencies.

The animal brains and nervous systems operate quite a bit differently. The signals do not often rely in a single path or a single signal to make things happen. To transmit a true, low-power signal, multiple paths and multiple signal details are transmitted where it is the collection of these signals which spell out the truth. If there are minor glitches, interferences or inhibitions along the way, the general signal still gets through most of the time.

If they are thinking of making a brain to prosthetic control signalling system based on wireless communications, it would be a huge mistake not to use multiple signals and frequencies to make things happen as this is the way the brain and the nervous system already does things.

I find this to be the mistake they are likely to make as they made the same mistake with artificial blood circulation system which are intended to keep the body alive during heart surgeries. Initially, they just hooked up a streaming pump and wondered why the body wasn't working or surviving under that condition. Well, turns out that the body NEEDS the pumping and gushing style of blood circulation because as the blood is pushed, it still needs those moments of pause to absorb and distribute oxygen and other stuff like that.

I expect the mistake to be made. Now let's sit back and wait for it to come true.

Samsung in 'last-stage talks' to use Google TV, will show off hardware after CES

The true second act of Google TV won't take place until new hardware hits the streets, and Reuters reports that while Samsung is still on board,it will unveil its product(s) next year at an event other than CES. There's no word on when or where we might see hardware from other partners like LG, but at last year's show Vizio and Samsung (pictured above) were the only ones to display their efforts. TV division prez Yoon Boo-keun confirmed the company was working with Google on the rollout, and apparently indicated Samsung's service would "differ" from competitors. We'll have to find out what that means, but i the meantime what we can expect to see in Las Vegas are OLED TVs, which he said Samsung would have on display. After being teased by countless concepts, we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for price tags and shipping dates, but those details will likely remain under wraps until January.

US envoy: China promises clean energy access (AP)

BEIJING ? U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson said Chinese officials promised foreign technology suppliers equal access to their booming clean energy industry in trade talks amid pressure to revive global growth.

Bryson said the officials told him Monday the country will invest $1.7 trillion over the next five years in clean energy and other emerging technologies. He said they pledged a "level playing field" for U.S. and other foreign suppliers.

Beijing is spending heavily to develop wind, solar and other clean energy, both to curb demand for imported oil and gas and to create profitable industries. But business groups complain it is improperly supporting Chinese technology suppliers in violation of free-trade pledges and trying to limit foreign access to promising fields.

Chinese officials said foreign producers of new energy vehicles will be eligible for subsidies on an equal basis with local rivals, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said in a statement. It said Beijing promised not to require them to help Chinese partners set up new brands or hand over technology ? two conditions automakers worried might be imposed as a condition of being allowed to make or sell cars in China.

Access to China's markets for high-tech goods is especially sensitive for the United States and other Western economies that want technology exports to shore up flagging economic growth and cut high unemployment.

"They intend to provide a fair and level playing field in those industries," Bryson said after the two-day meeting of the U.S.-Chinese Joint Committee on Commerce and Trade in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

The top Chinese envoy, Vice Premier Wang Qishan, "said there would be significant opportunities to Chinese and U.S. and other foreign companies," Bryson said.

That pledge also covers high-end equipment manufacturing, energy-saving and environmental technologies, biotechnology, information technology, alternative energy and advanced materials, according to the U.S. Trade Representative.

The U.S.-Chinese committee aims to defuse trade tensions by focusing on individual policy disputes. Previous meetings have produced pledges by Beijing to lower barriers to imports of American beef and to fight rampant Chinese software piracy.

This week's meeting came amid mounting demands by some American lawmakers for punitive tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing fails to ease exchange-rate controls. They say China's yuan is kept undervalued, giving its exporters an unfair trade advantage and wiping out jobs in the United States.

Also Monday, the two governments announced agreements to improve cooperation on intellectual property, technology, energy, trade statistics and business relations.

Beijing promised to take more steps to combat rampant software piracy by promoting use of legal software by local governments and companies, the U.S. statement said. It said they would launch a joint effort next year to stop online sales of counterfeit goods.

Earlier Monday, Wang appealed to U.S. envoys for cooperation to revive the global economy, emphasizing shared goals instead of disputes over currency and other irritants.

"We are facing a very serious global economic crisis," Wang said. "Ensuring economic health is the responsibility of every nation. Unbalanced progress is better than balanced decline."

Leaders of the world's biggest and second-biggest economies have pledged to work together to shore up global growth but ties have been strained by complaints about China's exchange-rate controls and access to its markets. Beijing is uneasy about Washington's moves to expand its political and military presence in Asia.

Bryson warned earlier Monday that American lawmakers and businesspeople "are moving toward a more negative view" of U.S.-Chinese trade ties.

President Barack Obama pressed Premier Wen Jiabao, China's top economic official, over Beijing's currency controls in a meeting last week on the sidelines of an Asian economic regional gathering in Indonesia.

The U.S. trade deficit with China hit a monthly high of $29 billion in August and is on track to surpass last year's $273 billion, the highest ever recorded with a single country.

China records 300 million registered microblog users (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China has more than 300 million registered microbloggers, state media said Monday, one of its fastest growing groups of internet users that the government has vowed to control.

The country has the most internet users in the world, at 485 million, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing Zhang Xinsheng, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

It also has the world's largest "internet infrastructure," Zhang said. The statistics were released during an internet conference in China's central Hubei province.

But authorities are facing challenges in creating a "civilized online environment," on social media platforms such as the country's most popular Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Corp's Weibo, the deputy head of the State Council Information Office, Qian Xiaoqian, said.

Beijing has repeatedly criticized microblogs for irresponsibly spreading what it calls unfounded rumors.

Microblogs allow users to issue bursts of opinion -- a maximum of 140 Chinese characters -- that can course through chains of followers who instantly receive messages, challenging censors who have a hard time monitoring the tens of millions of messages sent every day.

Sina has faced increasing regulatory scrutiny, with government officials pressuring the company to better police Weibo, which has become a powerful medium to spread news and opinions and vent frustration against government policies.

China's ruling Communist Party has vowed to intensify control over online social media and instant messaging tools. But analysts say it is unlikely to shut down what has become an important valve for monitoring and easing social pressures.

Sina and other Chinese microblog operators already deploy technicians and software to monitor content and block and remove comment deemed unacceptable, especially about protests, official scandals and party leaders.

China's Internet Network Information Center had said earlier that the number of Chinese users registered on domestic microblog sites reached 195 million by the end of June, a more than threefold increase on the number at the end of 2010.

Gynecologist faces charge for secret photos (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? A German prosecutor said on Monday that 700 women had agreed to press charges against a gynaecologist who is suspected of secretly taking thousands of pictures of patients during check-ups in his practice.

As many as 3,000 female patients may have fallen victim to the doctor's hidden camera during examinations at his office in the town of Schifferstadt in western Germany, local state prosecutor Lothar Liebing said.

"He stands accused of secretly taking photos of female patients' private body parts," Liebing said. "We now need to make clear to what extent he has done this and, of course, why he did this."

The gynaecologist could face up to a year in prison if convicted for violating intimacy laws, according to Liebing, but the investigations could be protracted due to the number of photographs -- more than 35,000 -- found in the doctor's office.

German media have said the doctor is 56 years old.

The doctor's practice is now closed, according to Liebing.

Chipping away at farmer payments (Politico)

Left at the barn door, farm bill negotiators must now decide what can be salvaged from the supercommittee?s wreckage as they shift their focus toward producing their own stand-alone legislation before the current authorization bill expires next September.

It was always a shotgun marriage: the House and Senate agriculture committees would generate $23 billion in savings and get a ticket on the supercommittee?s fast-moving, amendment-free deficit train. But more than most of their colleagues, the agriculture leadership did at least try, and the weeks of backroom negotiations could prove valuable still as a first Washington exercise in the need for change in agriculture policy.

What emerged was a broad consensus that the current system of direct cash payments to producers ? costing $5 billion a year ? can no longer be defended. Government support for farmers should be a function of real planted acres, not outdated data measuring a producer?s ?base? acreage from years ago. And tighter payment limits of $105,000 are proposed for new safety net programs.

But instead of one overarching replacement for direct payments, the draft bill proposes at least three options, one tailored specifically for a single crop, cotton. Indeed, the old farm coalition may never be quite the same, as cotton?s decision to go it alone isolated rice and peanuts, making the South less of a player. Instead, the biggest tension matched the Corn Belt ? flush with ethanol-driven prices ? vs. the Great Plains wheat country represented by powerful Senate Democrats.

The last farm bill was also written in an election year, 2008, so that needn?t prevent the committees from trying again in 2012. And even before January, any plan that promises $23 billion in savings could prove a hot date for those trying to pay for year-end bills, such as extending jobless benefits or reduced payroll taxes.

In a statement Monday, Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the House and Senate Agriculture committee chairs, gave no hint of their plans, but the two have come out of the past month with their working relationship strengthened.

?The Joint Select Committee?s failure to reach a deal on an overall deficit reduction package effectively ends this effort,? Lucas and Stabenow said. ?We are pleased we were able to work in a bipartisan way with committee members and agriculture stakeholders to generate sound ideas to cut spending by tens of billions ? We will continue the process of reauthorizing the farm bill in the coming months and will do so with the same bipartisan spirit that has historically defined the work of our committees.?

No plans have been announced to release the bill itself, but within the all-important commodity title, the latest scoring from the Congressional Budget Office is said to credit the committees with $16.7 billion in outlay savings ? a 27 percent reduction.

Direct payments and the related ACRE program would be ended and producers given the choice of three primary options, the largest of which is a new revenue protection plan expected to cost nearly $16.5 billion and designed to cover so-called shallow losses outside of the crop insurance typically bought by growers.

Investing in Automobile Dealerships How to Do it Appropriate ...

The financial qualities of the auto dealership are desirable:

??.reasonable expansion and chance and large returns. Franchised new car vendor revenues have developed at a seven.2% annual price given that 1992, about two times the fee of GDP. In addition, this development has occur with only reasonable chance, as the supplier body did not drop funds on a pretax basis for a single year in the previous 20 ? even throughout the 1989-1991 sector down-cycle. Ultimately, in spite of main modifications in the car industrys construction, dealer returns have remained high, with pretax ROE averaging 26.one% over the previous twenty years?. [MerrillLynch, April 19th, 2004 Report on "Auto Dealers".]

Athletes from practically each and every key activity have invested in new auto dealerships: Rick Hendrick, Roger Penske, John Elway, Troy Aikman, Evander Holyfield, Arnold Palmer, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Alex Rodriguez to title a handful of.

The idea is not new. Johnny Lujack, 1947 Heisman Trophy winner and Chicago Bear Professional-Bower, started a company in 1954 that would sooner or later expand to sixteen franchises distribute over forty acres, with sales of more than ten,000 cars and $one hundred fifty million, for each yr. Lujack retired from the automobile company after virtually fifty several years as a profitable vendor.

WHEN IS THE Right TIME?

?This is the time you have been waiting around for?, reviews Greg Gilmore in the June 2005 concern of Vendor Journal.

Supplier Executive reported that last year 2004 ranked as the 4th greatest for new unit income by franchised new-car dealers. Complete dealership dollars exceeded $714 billion, up a lot more than two% from 2003.

The fact is that at any time is the proper time. In 1991, in the depths of an automotive melancholy, John Elway asked me, prior to signing his buy contract, if ?this? 1991 was the appropriate time to purchase. I told him that it is how you acquire it and how you sell it that count. That calendar year he made a $20 million investment. At the time he had a simple Mazda keep on Arapahoe Road, in Englewood. I sold the Mazda franchise for him and Nissan gave him its franchise to put in the aged Mazda building. Shortly thereafter, I put collectively another transaction that had John acquire the Mazda shop on 104th Voie, in Thornton. John then terminated Suzuki and put the Mazda keep with his Oldsmobile and Hyundai franchises. After that he purchased one particular far more dealership a Ford franchise and then, in 1995, offered the entire bundle to Republic Industries for $86 million.

A lot of individuals have been fearful to purchase a dealership in 1991 and thought that John took a large gamble. But, he failed to ?gamble?. He structured his purchases and product sales properly, and then capitalized on his investment.

For case in point, despite the fact that GM and Ford missing funds as they did in 1991, individual dealers created thousands and thousands, in accordance to NADA Country wide Car Dealers Affiliation and Automotive News statistics, the average dealers pretax margin may differ between one particular and two % of their somme revenue. Why? The dealers seize a broader organization base than the company. While the manufacturer helps make its income on new car revenue, the dealers have the further equilibrium of the elements departments, services departments, used automobile departments, finance departments, insurance departments and, in some situations, entire body stores. As a result, whilst the manufacturer is dependent on each years new car product sales, a dealers achievement is based more on the total number of cars in operation.

DOES THE DEALERSHIPS Heritage Make any difference?

A small, but dont be intimidated by it. Soon after Jimmy Vasser won the CART racing championship for Target, I set with each other a transaction for Jimmy to buy a dueled Chevrolet-Toyota franchise, in Napa, that misplaced cash for the previous 10 consecutive many years. I place Jimmy jointly with a dealership supervisor and Jimmys dad, who had some preceding employed vehicle experience, signed-on as employed automobile supervisor.

Subsequently, after heading to vendor university and passing by way of the chairs, Jimmys father took over as Common Supervisor the keep thrived and Jimmy not only bought the dealership land and facility, but acquired the Ford retailer in the next town, and is presently developing a new Toyota keep so that his Chevrolet and Toyota franchises can have separate amenities.

WHAT DOES IT Get TO BE Successful?

Good assistance. Excellent guidance is the two critical and hard to locate. In the phrases of Trace Armstrong, prior president of the NFL People Association: ?Theres just so much negative assistance out there staying provided to these men. It is genuinely type of scary.? [Noted by Eric Fisher, March 27, 2000.]

As with the Enjoyment and Sports activities Industries, there is so considerably funds in the car organization, that everybody wants to get a piece of it. Consequently, everyone thinks he or she is an specialist in analyzing and structuring bargains, when in fact they just want to be a broker that will get a commission from the deal.
Sidebar: New car dealership revenues achieved practically A single Trillion Dollars in 2004. The dealerships and seller related industries account of around 15% of the Gross Countrywide Solution of the United States.

HOW TO Develop A Successful Staff?

An investor requirements a team. Usually, its the very same team they have, supplemented by an expert in the car company. Dont get lulled into a untrue perception of safety that loyalty is synonymous with the ?factory? or ?bankers?.

For illustration, Ford made one particular of its black dealers a superstar athlete the stage guy, brokering conferences with senior executives and acting as a conduit in between the firm and Jesse Jackson. He mediated disputes in between Ford and its dealers, and he promoted the business in public appearances. He even had a close partnership with some Ford loved ones members.

?He had some close friends in higher spots,? mentioned John Clissold, a retired Ford Credit executive. ?[The head of Ford Credit score] was a quite robust supporter.? But, when trouble came, it didnt issue. Organization was organization. ? ?one factory executive acquainted with the predicament summed up the prevailing feeling at corporate headquarters: [the superstar] was headed for a cliff and we were not going over with him.? [Story by Bill Vlasic and Mark Truby / The Detroit News Sunday, Could 26, 2002.]

The reality is that the factory and financial institution staff have a duty to do what is best for the factory or lender, not what is greatest for your client. Its the law. They have a legal obligation to their shareholders ? no issue how nice or how near your consumer is to them.

Fiscal statements and an accountant are not ample. Your shopper wants a member of your crew that is a student of the industry. A worthwhile automotive assertion can be certified and comply with each principle of accounting, yet nevertheless convey a false impression of achievement. There are so numerous nuisances in defining and structuring automotive transactions, that your shopper wants an expert in the subject who can figure out both what automotive offer is ideal for the athlete and what is the ideal way to get it.

So while your group could consist of accountant, attorneys, agents and professionals that are excellent at their employment, except if a university student of the sector is extra somebody who does nothing but structure buys and sells each day, a crucial ingredient to accomplishment will be lacking.

Feel of it in conditions of any activity or enterprise. If a person desires to produce a championship group in a specific activity, is it created with people who perform the recreation fifty% of the time, seventy five% of the time, or a person who plays it each day?

Dont forget: The nicest factor they at any time said about Richard Nixon was: ?He appears like a utilised vehicle salesman.?
