Streetlights Draw Insects at Ground Level

More insects, including many carnivores and scavengers, hang out under streetlights than between them, even during the day. Christopher Intagliata reports

You've probably seen clouds of insects swirling round a streetlamp at night. But something you may not have noticed is that streetlights attract bugs to the ground below them, too?especially carnivorous bugs, like beetles. So says a study in the journal Biology Letters by researchers at the University of Exeter. Thomas W. Davies, Jonathan Bennie and Kevin J. Gaston,"Street lighting changes the composition of invertebrate communities"]

The researchers set up 28 traps in the grass below and between streetlamps in the English town of Helston, in Cornwall. They collected captured insects at dawn and dusk over three days, and ended up with nearly 1,200 specimens. Turns out, more bugs hung out under the lights than between them. And that was true at night and day?suggesting that streetlights permanently upped the value of the buggy real estate below them.

The researchers also found greater numbers of predators and scavengers under the lamps?like ground beetles, harvestmen and ants?because it may be easier to hunt for prey with the help of a spotlight.

With artificial lighting increasing globally at 6 percent a year, the authors say there's a chance light pollution could shake up food webs in unforeseen ways. Call it a bug in the system.

$10,000 iPad Prototype Was ?Most Likely? Stolen Property, Says eBay Seller

Selling Apple prototypes is tricky business. There's always the chance that Apple will shut it down and ask for the device back. The seller of the dual-dock iPad prototype knew this when he posted his Ebay auction. "I wasn't expecting the auction to finish, I was expecting Apple to take it down."

Qatar Mall Fire: 13 Children Among Dead

DOHA, Qatar ? Qatar's Interior Ministry said 13 children were among 19 people killed in a fire that broke out in one of the country's fanciest shopping malls late Monday morning, raising questions about building safety in the booming Gulf state.

At least some of the victims died as rescuers struggled to reach a child care center at the Villaggio mall in the capital Doha, according to Qatar's Minister of State for Interior Affairs, Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani.

"We tried our best, but when we got there, the children were trapped inside. We are very sorry for what happened. We tried as much as we could to save these people," Sheik Abdullah told reporters in Doha.

Four of the children killed were Spanish citizens living in the small Arab emirate, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said. It did not identify the children, citing Spanish privacy regulations.

Also, a 3-year-old French child was among the victims, the deputy minister for overseas French citizens, Yamina Benguigui, said in a statement.

Two-year-old New Zealand triplets, Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes, were among the victims, according to New Zealand media reports.

"Our daughter rang. What can you say? It's absolutely devastating," the children's grandmother, Jo Turner, told Fairfax Media. "They were everything to her. She was a great mum. She was a hands-on mum."

Turner said her daughter, Jane Weekes, had lived in Qatar for about five years, although she had returned to New Zealand to give birth to the triplets. The triplets' father, Martin Weekes, is listed on his LinkedIn networking site as a senior adviser at Qatar Media Services and a former chief executive of Auckland's Eden Park sports stadium.

Four teachers and two civil defense officials were among the dead, the Qatari ministry said on its official Twitter page.

At least three of the nursery teachers were from the Philippines and died of smoke inhalation, Philippine Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said in Manila.

Another 17 people were injured, including four children, according to authorities. Most of those hurt were rescuers responding to the blaze. A brother of one of the dead Filipino teachers was among the injured but had recovered, Hernandez said.

Witnesses earlier reported thick black smoke pouring from the ritzy mall around midday. Amateur photos and videos posted online showed firefighters rescuing victims by climbing on the roof.

The Interior Ministry said the fire was extinguished hours later.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Thick smoke and heat hindered rescue efforts, as did a lack of floor plans and malfunctioning sprinkler systems, the ministry said on Twitter.

Sheik Abdullah said all buildings in the country abide by safety requirements, but a special committee will nonetheless be set up to monitor building safety standards.

The Villaggio opened in 2006 and is one of Qatar's most popular shopping and amusement destinations. Retailers include many well-known Western brands, such as Foot Locker, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and British department store Marks & Spencer, according to the mall's website.

Malls throughout the oil-rich Arab Gulf are popular with families looking for entertainment destinations that provide relief from soaring summer temperatures. The Villaggio includes an ice skating rink, theme park, movie theater and indoor Venice-style gondola rides.

New construction projects such as the Villaggio have transformed the face of once-sleepy Doha in recent years, as the country benefits from a hydrocarbon boom. The OPEC member state is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.

Qatar won the right to host soccer's 2022 World Cup a year and a half ago.

China Drops Dollar in Direct Trade of Yuan

May 27, 2012

in Asia, BRIC, China, G20, USD, central banks, currencies, exchange rates, foreign investment, forex, indicators, international economy, market reports, news and updates, trends, world reserve currency

Slowly but surely, the reserve currency status of the United States dollar is transitioning into a lesser role, at least for China.? As early as June, the AP reports, the Yen and Yuan will begin direct trading without the use of the USD as a ?cross-currency? intermediary.? This means that the USD will no longer be involved in setting the rates between the Japanese Yen and the Chinese Yuan.

The aim here is to encourage bilateral trade and investment between China and Japan (the world?s second and third-largest economies, remember), and, some speculate, the risks involved with the USD and costs associated with extra exchange transactions.? Scholars of history will take special note for several reasons, one of which is that it is the first time China has allowed the Yuan to trade directly with any currency besides the US dollar.

Zero Hedge posted an excellent chart as a reminder that over the centuries, major reserve currencies have come and gone several times, just as empires never last ? neither does the predominant currency of global trade.? Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and France have all been world-dominant economies at earlier points in time.? Does the average American even know what this means?

It?s a very good time to begin learning Mandarin, if you have not already.

Moscow police detain 40 as gay activists demand right to hold parade, face Christian protest

MOSCOW (AP) ? Gay activists tried to stage two demonstrations in Moscow on Sunday to demand the right to hold a gay pride parade in the Russian capital, but they were blocked first by Orthodox Christian opponents and then by police, who detained a total of about 40 people from both sides.

The gay activists first gathered outside the city council building, where a few scuffles occurred as their opponents tried to disrupt the demonstration, decrying homosexuality as a sin. After police broke up that protest, another group tried to stage a second protest at city hall, but once again police moved in and detained participants, including prominent gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev.

The majority of those detained were gay activists, but some of the Christian demonstrators also were pushed into police buses. Police said about 40 people were detained in all.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but anti-gay sentiment remains strong.

Activists have long petitioned the Moscow government for permission to stage such a parade, but have always been denied. Former Mayor Yuri Luzhkov described gay parades as "satanic," while current Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said he disapproves of gay gatherings because they could offend the religious beliefs of many Russians.

Gay activist Galina Kaptur criticized city authorities for treating homosexuality as a contagious disease that would be spread through society if gays were allowed to hold a parade.

"It's as if they thought that if all left-handed people held a parade, then afterward everyone would become left-handed," Kaptur said. "This is wrong."

Among the opponents of gay rights was Dmitry Tsarionov, who spoke to the crowd in front of a sign that said "Moscow is not Sodom."

"I will not allow perverts to bring the wrath of God onto our city," he said. "I want our children to live in a country where a sin that so awfully distorts human nature is not preached in schools."

This month, Alexeyev became the first person convicted under a new law in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, which makes it a crime to spread "gay propaganda" among minors. Alexeyev was charged after he picketed St. Petersburg's city hall with a placard that said "homosexuality is not a perversion." He was fined 5,000 rubles (about $170).

The Russian parliament is considering extending the measure nationwide, which gay activists say would make it even easier to ban their public demonstrations.

Golf Recap: Jason Dufner has two-stroke lead halfway through Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Jason Dufner lists Ben Hogan as his hero.

At Hogan?s Alley, Dufner had the lead halfway through the Colonial with a chance for a Texas two-step that only Hogan has accomplished.

Dufner had a bogey-free 6-under 64 on another windy day Friday to reach 11-under 129. A week after winning the Byron Nelson Championship, Dufner had a two-stroke lead over Zach Johnson ? the 2010 winner who shot a 67.

The only player to win both PGA Tour events in the Dallas-Fort Worth market in the same year was Hogan in 1946.

?That would be great company to join, obviously,? Dufner said. ?To have anything compared to him or be talked in the same sentence with him is something that would be pretty unique and special to me.?

With the way Dufner is playing these days, his game certainly is in a different class.

Both of Dufner?s PGA Tour victories came in his previous three starts. He has led or shared the lead after 11 of his last 34 rounds.

?When I step to the first tee, I feel like I?m going to play a good round of golf. That?s a nice way to play. It?s a comfortable way to play,? Dufner said. ?I?m just trying to be confident and think about the things I?ve been doing for almost a year now, and realize that those are the things that are making me successful out here, and not get too caught up in everything else that?s going on around me.?

Johnson, who had an opening bogey-free 64, started the second round eagle-birdie-bogey. Then there was a four-hole stretch on the back nine when he alternated birdies and bogeys twice.

During the third round Saturday, Johnson will be paired with his buddy Dufner.

?He?s got a good rhythm about him, about his game right now,? Johnson said. ?But it?s irrelevant who I play with. I?m not playing against him. I?m playing against the golf course and the conditions and the elements that are presented. So that?s my focus.?

Two years ago, Johnson set the Colonial tournament scoring record at 21-under 259 en route to the last of his seven PGA Tour victories.

Van Pelt (64) and Tommy Gainey (67) were tied for third at 133, a stroke better than Tom Gillis (69).

Defending Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial champion David Toms shot a 71 and missed the cut at 5-over 145.

With the wind again blowing steady about 20 mph with higher gusts, Dufner stood in the middle of the fairway at No. 5, his 14th hole of the day. Dufner stepped back twice before changing clubs, then hit the approach to about 18 feet for his sixth and last birdie.

That is the end of Colonial?s ?horrible horseshoe? ? as Nos. 3-5 are known because of their layout and with the longest par 4s sandwiching a 243-yard par 3.

Dufner has played those holes 4 under through two rounds, and wasn?t even aware of the trio?s reputation.

?It?s just a product of playing well and having good control of my golf ball,? he said. ?It doesn?t really matter what holes you?re playing.?

Starting on the back nine, Dufner had two birdies, a 5-footer at the 166-yard 13th hole and 7-footer at the 363-yard 17th. He then birdied Nos. 1-3 for the second day in a row.

?I got off to a great start. ? I had a chance to catch Dufner, is he not hot right now,? said Gainey, who opened his round with three consecutive birdies before bogeys at Nos. 7 and 8. ?I got hot and then let a couple get away.?

After Colonial, Dufner ? who got married between his two victories ? plans to take a short break before beginning preparations for the next major. The U.S. Open is in three weeks at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The 35-year-old Dufner, who has moved up to 14th in the world, had consecutive weekend rounds of 75 at the Masters and tied for 24th after starting 69-70.

It was during the final round of the PGA Championship last August when Dufner had consecutive bogeys on holes No. 15-17. That cost him the lead and forced him into a three-hole playoff that he lost to Keegan Bradley.

?I think it helped me out a lot this year. It kind reaffirmed the things that I was doing was right, and I was on the right direction and right path,? he said. ?I didn?t think too much about losing. I just thought about all of the good things that happened. ? I think at the PGA kind of showed me that I could really play at a high level.?

Divots: Sergio Garcia, the `01 Colonial champ, followed his opening 66 with a 73. That included an 8 on the 387-yard ninth hole when he hit his approach into the water fronting the green, and then knocked his drop in there as well. ? Ben Crane (141), who lives just north of Fort Worth, finished his second-round 71 with an eagle at the ninth hole. He holed a wedge shot from 104 yards. ? Harrison Frazar missed the cut with rounds of 72 and 74. He still had a highlight Friday, a hole-in-one with an 8-iron at the 183-yard 16th. ? The last of 14 players to win both the Colonial and Byron Nelson Championship was Rory Sabbatini, at the 2007 Colonial and 2009 Nelson. When Hogan did it in 1946, the tournaments weren?t played in consecutive weeks.

SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) ? Hale Irwin shot his age with a 5-under 66, finishing the second round of the Senior PGA Championship two shots behind leaders Roger Chapman and John Cook.

Cook also had a 66 to match Chapman at 7 under after a more forgiving day at Harbor Shores. Chapman had a 67. Michael Allen broke the course record with a 64, recovering nicely from a first-round 77.

Starting on the back nine, Irwin birdied four of his first six holes. He has won the major championship four times, though not since 2004. He was the 54-hole leader last year at Valhalla but finished fourth.

Chapman led by a stroke after the first round and didn?t make a bogey Friday until the par-5 ninth, his final hole. Irwin also bogeyed No. 9.

BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) ? England?s James Morrison shot an 8-under 64 to take a four-stroke lead in the BMW PGA Championship, while Rory McIlroy had a 79 to miss the cut and leave himself in danger of losing the top spot in the world ranking to No. 2 Luke Donald.

Morrison had a 12-under 132 total on Wentworth?s West Course in the European Tour?s flagship event. Donald, the defending champion, was tied for second with David Drysdale. Donald had a 68, and Drysdale shot 70. Donald must finish solo eighth or better to reclaim the No. 1 position.

NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN?S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) ? Alabama won the NCAA Division I Women?s Golf Championship for the first time, holding off Southern California by a stroke on the 72nd hole.

The Crimson Tide gave coach Mic Potter his first national title when senior Brooke Pancake rolled in a 4-footer for par on No. 18. Alabama finished at 6-over 294 for a 19-over 1,171 total.

Oklahoma?s Chirapat Jao-Javanil won the individual title by four strokes, closing with a 2-under 70 to finish at 6-under 282.

maxmi's Site - How To Manage Stolen Identity : Legal Information

You are here: Home / General / How To Manage Stolen Identity

Identity theft has been called the crime of the information age with more than ten million victims every year within North America. That quantity will barely raise in the years to come. Identity theft occurs when your own information has been taken and used without your consent and then used to commit fraud.? The information that has been stolen can be used to commit different deceitful offenses that can be in the form of your name, address, credit card information, social security number and your date of birth.?

If you have become the sufferer of identity theft, you may well be left with hospital and credit card expenses, bad credit and the hassle of dealing with monetary agencies and police departments in order to clear out your name.

Steps on how you can prevent them from stealing your identity:

  • Destroy documents that hold personal monetary information, such as statements, credit card offers, copies of credit applications, receipts and insurance forms, prior to throwing them out.
  • Don?t supply personal information on the cellular phone, by e-mail or through the internet except you initiated the exchange or recognize with whom you are dealing.
  • Before you uncover some personal information, know how it will be used and if it will be shared.
  • Be informed of your letters. Take note of when charges for expenses should arrive and if you notice a misplaced bill, contact that company immediately and tell them. It is likely that your letters was sent to someone else as a result of identity theft.
  • Guard your PIN when using the automated teller machines and debit machines. A new theme to identity theft is stealing your banking information when you use bank machine or interact machines.
  • Make sure that you only hold the personal information that you totally need. Keep other documents such as your social insurance number, birth certificate and passport in a secure area.
  • Use passwords that are not easily guessed for your credit card, bank account and cell phone accounts.

Another type of identity theft that is usual is a form called phishing. Phishing is a falsified e-mail that tries to trick its victims into providing their personal and financial information. When a phishing email is received, certain information is asked, for example verifying your full name, date of birth and home address. Additional information that can be asked is for your banking information, credit card and or social security number.

If you think your personal information has been used without your information, there are guidelines that you can take. Keep a document of all correspondence and conversations that occurred and call your financial establishment aside from your local authorities. You can also place a fraud alert on your credit account by contacting your local agency.

For best identity theft prevention avail yourself of a service. You can balance the best ones at Identity Theft Labs.

Samsung spills Galaxy Note's ICS guts, releases kernel source code to devs
Back when it was unveiled at IFA 2011, Sammy's famed phablet was more of an attractive oddity than sure hit. Skip to now, and that 5.3-incher's not only taken the European continent by storm, it's also made inroads onto these American shores via AT&T. In keeping with the open source embrace begun last October, the OEM's once again offering up the device's kernel code, this time for the skinned ICS OS unlocked versions currently run. Devs and the amateur hackers that love them should make haste and hit up the source below to get cracking on this latest software nut.

The Best Ways to Effectively Market on the Internet | Domain Names ...

The marketing content you use offers so much to your business simply because of the number of uses it can have. Perhaps you?re trying to find a way to improve the response rates you get from your existing marketing attempts. If this is you, start with the simple tips in this article. Actually there are quite a few tricks you can implement, but rest assured they are all white hat and solid. (Robb Wolf 30 Day Total Transformation

Most people avoid those who are seen to be a fake no matter what the situation is. It is about being a genuine person, being yourself as much as possible when writing these messages. If you are trying to brand yourself and your business, it is important to always be consistent with the messages you write. Being reliable and consistent means you have to let people get to know you through your writing. You need to be yourself when you write. People will feel like they know you when you do this. When it comes to the foundation of trust and relationships online, this is how you do it. When you look at the basis for any successful online business, relationships and trust play a huge role. Your business communications need to be as specific as possible. Of course we are mainly talking about communicating with your audience. You must produce material that makes the connection and makes people want to listen to you. Broad brush strokes are the quickest way to reveal that you have no idea what you?re doing. This is why you have to present specific information an then back it up with citations from authority sites and sources. In addition to this being the most popular kind of information it is also considered the most valuable information. Then you simply need to take it a step further so that you can join its forces with the forces of whatever you?re marketing. This is where relevance becomes incredibly important. Visit Website

It is so much easier to be matter of fact about these kinds of things; honesty is the best way to deal with people. But that is easier said than done for many people. In the case of a business, there is fear that business will be lost or customers will stop buying, etc. When you are preselling anything, this is the time when you must be upfront about everything. A very good product will have warts; it?s just that they have fewer than the bad products. So, don?t try to hide the flaws; after all, people will probably already know that they exist. This means that talking about the problems isn?t just a good idea, it is what will help you build trust with your potential buyers.

You are going to see a much bigger difference in your business once you learn how to create the best marketing content possible. A great way to actually see the differences is to pay attention to your tracking metrics. Not only will you see a lower bounce rate and a higher rate of return traffic, your conversions are just going to get higher as well. bestflightsimulatorgames.org

LEDs light bulbs for Home

With the rising prices of energy, along with a wider public awareness of environmental issues, homes and businesses across the globe are turning to newer, greener, and more efficient technologies. Light-emitting diodes, also known as LED lights, are one of these advanced technologies. There are a number of reasons that people are switching their incandescent light bulbs to LEDs, but there are four particular advantages to this mode of lighting.

One of the most significant advantages to using LEDs is the savings in energy. LEDs use significantly less wattage than incandescent bulbs. They also use less energy than the compact fluorescent bulbs that have long been touted as environmentally friendly. Simply replacing old lights with LEDs can cut electrical use by as much as 80%. Over the course of a light's lifespan, this will amount to incredible financial savings.

Another advantage of LEDs to note is their long lifespan. Many LED lights are made to last around 35,000 to 50,000 hours. This is incredibly longer than the typical incandescent light bulb, which will last only 750 to 2000 hours. Using LED lights will not only save money, but will save the time as one will not need to purchase or change bulbs so frequently.

One other major benefit of LEDs compared to other types of lighting is lower temperatures. Most of the electricity used in conventional light bulbs produces a good deal of heat. Both incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs waste 80 to 90% of energy just producing heat. In contrast, LEDs stay cool constantly. This is much safer, especially if a child or pet may be around. Even more, the lower heat production will help buildings save on cooling costs.

LEDs are also not made out of glass like other light bulbs. Anyone who has ever broken a light bulb understands how potentially dangerous they are, especially if children have access to them, such as with table lamps. LEDs are much safer. Combine the safety with their low energy demands and longevity and LEDS are a lighting option to be considered by any home or business owner.

As described above there are so many advantages of the LED lighting technology that before long the incandescent lamp will no longer be available.

Real friends are those that allow us to be ourselves, be comfortable, be stupid, make mistakes, and still not be judged. They are a mirror to our true selves and we can't fathom a life without them by our side. As Danielle Steele stated in her book The Gift: It's like some people just come through our lives, to bring us something, a gift, a blessing, a lesson we need to learn, and that's why they're here.

A test for real friendship is whether we can be happy for our friends' successes and supportive for their mishaps. Genuine care and support are what should define a friendship not jealousy, envy, and pity. Let's all remember the great words of Oscar Wilde: Anybody can sympathise with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathise with a friend success.

There are friendship quotes that celebrate the friends we turn to, find solace with, and seek support from. They make life more beautiful simply by being there, sharing and listening. friendship quotes and sayings

And sometimes the inevitable happens. The friendship catches fire. We start developing strong feelings to a friend and cross the thin line between love and friendship. We launch into treacherous territory naively convincing ourselves that should things not work out we can always stay friends. The reality of the matter is quite the opposite. While friendships can often end in love, love will never to convert to friendship. Should we ever jump in and then discover that our feelings are not returned, we'll almost always end up losing that friend forever. As the famous poem goes: You're not friends; you'll never be friends; you'll be in love 'till it kills you both; you'll fight, and you'll hate each other 'till it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends.

(AP) ? Usually a jamboree of youthful exuberance ? and questionable taste ? this year's Eurovision Song Contest features a pair of elderly acts among its top contenders.

Engelbert Humperdinck, 76, takes the stage Saturday night for the United Kingdom, 45 years after he first got international attention crooning the hit "Release Me." He'll be wearing a necklace given to him by Elvis Presley.

Humperdinck faces stiff competition for the gray vote from Russia's Buranovskiye Babushki, a group of six grannies, the eldest of them 77. Their performance understandably won't include the intense gyrations favored by many younger performers, but does feature some choreographed baking.

They'll be going up against 24 other finalists in the 57-year-old competition viewed by some 125 million people worldwide and hailed by its legion of devoted fans as harmless, kitschy fun that allows Europeans to forget their differences ? and economic troubles ? for at least one night.

As last year's winner, oil-rich Azerbaijan is hosting the annual competition. Few think it stands any chance of a repeat victory, but the country hopes the hundreds of millions of dollars it has invested in preparing for the event will serve as a public relations coup and mitigate misgivings about its poor democracy and human rights record.

Strong favorite Loreen, a 28-year-old Swede of Moroccan-Berber descent, will be venturing a racier outfit and sultrier performance than the grannies. Her song "Euphoria" even stands a chance of fair international commercial success ? it's already topped the Swedish charts for six weeks and gone platinum five times.

The winner is picked by juries and television viewers across the continent, so a broad appeal is deemed key to success.

Other serious contenders include Italy's Nina Zilli and her lively ode "Out of Love," Zeljko Joksimovic of Serbia with the slow and stripped-down "Nije Ljubav Stvar," and Romania's entry Mandinga, a band fronted by sultry vocalist Elena Ionescu, with their brash attempt at exotica "Zaleilah."

The host country, a comparatively little-known former Soviet republic, has dug deep to make sure it's also a star.

The new Crystal Hall concert venue, a light-bathed arena on a point jutting out into the Caspian Sea, cost $134 million to build and was put up in a speedy eight months. Countless more millions have been deployed embellishing the capital, Baku, and buying a huge fleet of brand new London-style taxis.

Such profligacy has aroused concerns about the spiraling costs involved in holding the contest in times of austerity.

"At the moment, if the costs are growing more and more every year and it needs to be more splendid, there are countries that would have huge difficulties, especially with financial situation in Europe at the moment, in organizing it," said Annika Nyberg Frankenhauser, media department for the European Broadcasting Union, under whose auspices Eurovision is held.

Amid the glitz, antigovernment activists have held a number of protests in the week running up to the final, seizing on the opportunity of the increased international media presence to draw attention to what they describe as the government's authoritarian style of rule.

On Friday, police quickly shut down a small flash mob near the competition venue, roughly dragging away dozens of demonstrators and stuffing them into waiting buses, at least of one which bore a Eurovision logo.

Three demonstration participants were sentenced to jail terms of five and six days on Saturday, while 17 others were fined 20-25 manat ($25-32).

(AP) ? A forensic scientist testified Friday that two cotton balls and a syringe needle allegedly saved after a steroids injection tested positive for Roger Clemens' DNA, a key moment as the government tries to prove the former pitcher used performance-enhancing drugs.

Alan Keel told jurors that the DNA on both cotton ball matches were "unique to one person who has ever lived on the planet" ? Clemens. He said that one of the cotton balls had a random match possibility of one in 15.4 trillion for Clemens' DNA, and the other had one in 173 trillion, when comparing to the population of white people in the U.S.

The needle was not as conclusive, because Keel was only able to get a handful of cells. That match was one in 449.

Brian McNamee, Clemens' former strength coach, earlier testified he collected the medical waste after injecting the pitcher with steroids in 2001, and turned them over to federal authorities in 2008. Earlier government witnesses testified that steroids were found on the medical waste.

Clemens is accused of lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

Prosecutors hope that Clemens' DNA ? which helped make him one of the most successful pitchers in baseball history ? will help them convict him of a federal crime.

While Keel's testimony was a milestone moment for the government, the defense indicated early on it wouldn't contest that the needle had both steroids and Clemens' DNA on it. But Clemens' lawyer Rusty Hardin said in his opening statement that the defense will contend that McNamee put the steroids in the needle after injecting Clemens and that the coach in fact had used the needle to inject Clemens with vitamin B12. Clemens has maintained for years that he received B12 shots and the local anesthetic lidocaine but not performance-enhancing drugs.

Prosecutor Courtney Saleski tried to pre-empt that by asking Keel if there was any way to "fake this."

Keel said no.

"If this were contrived, I would expect to obtain much more biological material," he said ? in other words, it would be hard to fake a sample with such a small amount of biological material on it.

The gauze pad, meanwhile, matched McNamee's DNA, to an even greater probability than Clemens did for the cotton balls. Keel said that the match was 1 in 1.8 quintillion people for white Americans. A quintillion has 18 zeroes in it.

During cross-examination, Clemens lawyer Michael Attanasio tried to suggest the possibility of contamination in the items McNamee saved.

But Keel said that if there were contamination, he would have expected to find McNamee's DNA on the needle. But he found only found Clemens'.

Attanasio suspended his cross-examination for the lunch break and planned to finish it Friday afternoon.

Also Friday, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he would have a hearing on Monday, June 4, to discuss the defense subpoena for the testimony of Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That committee held the congressional hearing that Clemens testified before in 2008. Issa, a California Republican, was not chairman at the time, but he participated in the congressional deposition of Clemens and criticized the panel, then run by Democrats, for having the hearing on steroids in baseball.

Issa and the committee have filed a motion to quash subpoenas for the congressman and for committee documents. They argue the subpoenas are barred by the Constitution's speech or debate clause, which protects elected officials from being questioned in a lawsuit about their legislative work.

(AP) ? A Florida A&M drum major who died after being hazed on a bus asked to go through the ordeal because it was seen as an honor, a defendant in the case said in a deposition released Wednesday

Robert Champion, 26, had asked all season to go through the hazing ritual, known as "crossing over," defendant Jonathan Boyce said.

"It's a respect thing, you know," Boyce told detectives. "Well, he was wanting to do it all ... all season."

Champion died last November after enduring a hazing ritual conducted by other band members on a bus outside a hotel in Orlando where FAMU had played its archrival in football. His death revealed a culture of hazing in the famed band, which has performed at Super Bowls and presidential inauguration parades. An autopsy concluded Champion suffered blunt trauma blows to his body and died from shock caused by severe bleeding.

Champion's parents have said their son was a vocal opponent of the routine hazing in the band.

In an interview earlier this year, Champion's father, Robert Sr., said the reason his son was hazed was because of his opposition to it.

Prosecutors in Orlando are releasing more than 1,500 pages of evidence against the 13 people charged in Champion's death last year. Eleven defendants are charged with a third-degree felony and two are charged with misdemeanors.

One hazing ritual called "the hot seat" involved getting kicked and beaten with drumsticks and bass drum mallets while covered with a blanket on a band bus called, "Bus C," band member Marc Baron told investigators. Baron isn't charged and wasn't on the bus the weekend Champion died.

Band members enduring the hazing also must run a gauntlet to the back of the bus while being hit and kicked in a ritual called "crossing over," he said.

"You start in the beginning and you go, you try to find your way to the back," Baron said.

Asked by investigator if it was how a member earns respect, Baron said: "In a certain way respect, but it's not really respect. It's just like band credentials."

Depositions offered clues to the defenses the defendants will use.

Defendant Aaron Golson denied getting on the bus where the hazing took place. He said he got a ride back from the game with a friend.

"I don't know anything that happened with Robert," Golson said.

Golson also told detectives that Champion wasn't into the hazing rituals.

"Man, I'm shock(ed) if that happens," Golson said when told that Champion chose to get on the bus to be hazed.

Another defendant, Caleb Jackson, at first told detectives that he wasn't on the bus when Champion was beaten but then changed his story when he was told that hotel video surveillance showed him getting off the bus. At the time of Champion's death, Jackson was on probation for a felony battery charge.

"I love Robert like a brother, more than ya'll, any, everybody in this band loves this man like a brother, you know what I'm saying," Jackson said.

FAMU's famed Marching 100 band was suspended shortly after the incident, and officials have said it will remain sidelined at least through the 2012-2013 school year.

The school also tried to fire band director Julian White. White's dismissal was placed on hold while the criminal investigation unfolded, but he insisted that he did nothing wrong and fought for months to get reinstated. He announced his retirement earlier this month.
