New electric and hybrid cars at Los Angeles Auto Show ...

Major car makers unveiled their latest electric and hybrid vehicles yesterday and today at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. As the show opens to the public tomorrow, consumers have a wide array of options to substitute for traditional gasoline-burning cars, as indicated in the accompanying slideshow. Among the highlights of the Auto Show are as follows:

BMW generated a lot of buzz with its futuristic-looking i3 electric and i8 plug-in hybrid concept cars, slated to go on sale in 2014, hopefully with nearly the same designs. In addition, BMW sells ?Active Hybrid? versions of its more recognizable 3, 5 and 7 Series.

Fisker, which combines high-end luxury and high performance with sustainable materials, offers what is arguably the sexiest car of any kind at the entire show, the Karma, which just happens to be an electric car. If you?ve got plenty of cash, you can have your alt-fuel cake and eat it too.

Toyota, as usual, led the way with a vast range of hybrid and electric vehicles, including the 3rd generation Prius hybrid in 4 different body styles as well as a plug-in hybrid. Toyota also now sells its Avalon, Highlander and Camry models with optional hybrid engines, and it has brought back the RAV4 EV all-electric SUV after an absence of over two decades.

Toyota?s high-end Lexus division, synonymous with luxury for many consumers, offers numerous hybrid models, including the ES, GS and LS sedans, the RX mid-sized SUV, and the stand-alone CT.

Ford is hot on Toyota?s heels, especially among the American car companies. with an impressive list of hybrid and electric offerings, . Ford?s models include the new C-Max in hybrid or plug-in hybrid form, the Fusion, also offered in hybrid and plug-in hybrid configurations, and the Focus with all-electric power.

Even Ford?s Lincoln division got in the act, offering a hybrid version of its MKZ model.

At General Motors, Chevrolet led the way with its Spark urban mini car available this summer with electric power. Chevy also sells the Volt electric vehicle, as well as its big Tahoe SUV and Silverado pickup truck in hybrid versions. Chevrolet will also offer what it calls ?mild hybrid? versions of its Malibu and Impala sedans, explaining that the electric motor will kick in to power things like the climate and sound systems when the cars come to a stop.

Cadillac offers its Escalade SUV in hybrid version, and expects to unveil its new ELR ?electric hybrid car? in January.

Buick sells the Lacrosse and Regal sedans with ?eAssist? mild hybrid technology similar to that of Chevrolet?s Malibu and Impala.

Honda is keeping pace with Toyota by offering the Insight, Civic and CR-Z hybrids, the Fit electric car, and the new Accord plug-in hybrid.

Nissan still sells the unique and recognizable LEAF all-electric car, and displayed a new concept, the Hi-Cross hybrid crossover vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz also opts for what it calls a ?mild hybrid? option choice with its large S-Class, and next year expects to offer the mid-sized E-Class with this option.

Audi sells its Q5 SUV as a hybrid, but also focuses on a number of ?TDI? diesel offerings to increase fuel efficiency.

Even smart, whose little 2-seater cars already achieve high gas mileage, now offers a new electric drive vehicle.

FIAT did something similar, bringing out an electric version of its already gas-stingy 500.

Infiniti offers its full-size M luxury model in hybrid version.

Volkswagen unveiled its new Jetta hybrid, and plans to roll out a hybrid version of its Touareg SUV by the middle of 2013.

And give some credit to Porsche, which has taken on the difficult task of adding hybrid technology to its high-performance cars for a demanding clientele. Porsche goes with ?mild hybrid? options, which can propel the cars at lower speeds, in its Cayenne and Panamera models.

Gas mileage politics

In July 2011, the Obama administration announced higher fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks beginning with the 2017 model year. The higher fuel standards were worked out with auto manufacturers, auto workers and other stakeholders. As auto makers work to achieve these gas mileage results and offer vehicles that consumers like, the latest hybrid and electric cars on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show will likely play a big role.

Fighting cuts access to Damascus airport, flights suspended

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad just outside Damascus on Thursday, cutting access to its international airport, and Dubai-based Emirates airline and EgyptAir stopped flights to the Syrian capital.

The Internet and some telephone lines went down across Syria. Rebels and the government traded blame for the blackout, the worst communications outage in 20 months of conflict.

Rebels fighting to topple Assad have been making gains around Syria by overrunning military bases and have been ramping up attacks on Damascus, his seat of power.

A rebel fighter who identified himself as Abu Omar, a member of the Jund Allah brigade, told Reuters that insurgents fired mortars at the airport's runways and were blocking the road linking it with the capital.

Speaking from the scene of the fighting, he said insurgents were not inside the airport but were able to block access to and from it.

A spokesman for a rebel Military Council in Damascus, Musaab Abu Qitada, said an artillery round was fired at a military site inside the airport and that fighting was now less than a kilometer (mile) away from the complex.

"We want to liberate the airport because of reports we see and our own information we have that shows civilian airplanes are being flown in here with weapons for the regime. It is our right to stop this," he told Reuters on Skype from Damascus.

U.S. and European officials said rebels were making gains in Syria, gradually eroding Assad's power, but said the fighting had not yet shifted decisively in their favor.

Two Austrian soldiers in a U.N. peacekeeping force deployed to monitor the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights were wounded when their convoy came under fire near Damascus airport, Austria's defense ministry said. Syria state television said the soldiers were wounded by gunfire when rebels attacked an army position near the airport road.

The Information Ministry later said the highway to the airport was safe after security forces cleared it of "terrorists." Rebels said fighting in the area was continuing. The ministry said the airport was operating regularly, but there were no flights scheduled to land in the evening.

The accounts of fighting could not be verified immediately because of tight restrictions on media access to Syria.

But many airlines had already halted flights. Emirates suspended daily service to Damascus "until further notice." EgyptAir also said it was suspending all flights to Damascus because of "the deterioration of the security situation" there.

An EgyptAir flight that left at 1:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) landed in Damascus on schedule but the pilot was instructed to take off straight back to Egypt, airport sources in Cairo said.

INTERNET, PHONE LINES DOWN

Residents said the Internet in Damascus crashed in the early afternoon, and mobile and land telephone lines were functioning only intermittently.

A blog post on Renesys, a U.S. company which tracks Internet traffic worldwide, said that at 12:26 pm (1026 GMT), the entire country's Internet connectivity shut down completely.

The government has been accused of cutting communications in previous assaults on rebel-held areas in Syria. Syria's minister of information said "terrorists" were responsible for the Internet shutdown, while the telecommunications minister blamed what he said was a fault in the main communications network.

The past two weeks have seen rebels seizing a series of army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power that he has used to bombard opposition strongholds, killing dozens of civilians as well. More than 40,000 people have been killed since the uprising began, according to opposition groups.

Rebels and activists said the fighting along the road to Damascus airport, southeast of the capital, was heavier in that area than at any other time in the conflict.

"PREPARING FOR MAJOR BATTLE"

Nabeel al-Ameer, from the rebel Military Council, said a large number of army reinforcements had arrived along the road after three days of scattered clashes ending with rebels seizing side streets to the north of it.

He said he hoped the proximity of the rebels to the airport would dissuade authorities from using it to import military equipment, but the priority now was to block the road.

There are several military airports around Damascus that remain under government control.

A Syrian security source told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the army had started a "cleansing operation" in the capital to confront rebel advances.

The source, who is from Assad's elite 4th Armoured Division, said one of the aims of the operation was to seal off the suburbs - where rebels are dominant - from the city center.

Assad is fighting an insurgency that grew out of peaceful demonstrations for democratic reform but has escalated, after a military crackdown on protesters, into a bloody civil war.

Syrian warplanes on Thursday bombed Kafr Souseh, Douma and Daraya, neighborhoods that fringe the center of the city where rebels have managed to hide out and ambush army units.

Activists said the areas were taking one of the heaviest poundings they had seen in months.

A senior European Union official said that Assad - whose family has held power in Syria for 42 years - might be preparing for a military showdown around Damascus by isolating the city with a network of checkpoints.

"The rebels are gaining ground but it is still rather slow. We are not witnessing the last days yet," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"On the outskirts of Damascus, there are mortars and more attacks. The regime is thinking of protecting itself ... with checkpoints in the next few days ... (It) seems the regime is preparing for major battle on Damascus."

A U.S. official said the rebels were "making important tactical gains that could eventually trigger a strategic shift in the conflict."

"They haven't reached that point yet, but the span of regime control is narrowing, and Assad's forces are having greater difficulty beating back the insurgents' progress," said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton echoed that view in remarks in a speech in Washington.

"I don't know that you can say that for the entire country it is yet at a tipping point, but it certainly seems that the regime will be much harder pressed in the next months," she said.

WARY BIG POWERS

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad but stopped short of arming rebel fighters as they fear heavy weapons could make their way into the hands of radical Islamist units, who have grown increasingly prominent in the insurgency.

Rebels decry their supporters for not providing them with surface-to-air missiles that they say they need to counter the air force. But recent looting of anti-aircraft missiles from army bases, as well as a slow stream of such weapons believed to be coming from Gulf Arab adversaries of Assad, has allowed them to shoot down some helicopters and jets.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told a Pentagon news conference the United States had not provided anti-aircraft missiles to the Syrian opposition, saying it was focused on nonlethal aid and humanitarian relief.

"Let me say unequivocally that we have not provided any of those kinds of missiles to the opposition forces located in Syria," he said.

Panetta and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak both told the news conference they believed Assad would ultimately fall.

"It's criminal behavior on a global scale what he is doing to his own people, using jet fighters and helicopters and artillery and tanks, killing his own people," Barak said. "The whole world is watching and somehow it's not easy to mobilize enough sense of purpose and unity of action and political will to translate ... our feelings about what happens there into action to stop it."

Peter Bouckeart, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch, said the surface-to-air missiles used so far appeared to have been captured from the Syrian military and there was no evidence any of the ones used to date "have come from outside Syria."

He said the number of these missiles in rebel hands was probably over 20 but could rise significantly if rebels continue to capture military bases.

The relatively small number of anti-aircraft missiles looted so far means that many rebel-controlled areas of the country remain vulnerable to air strikes. The Observatory said 15 citizens, including children and women, were killed during a bombing in Aleppo's Ansari district on Thursday.

Nigeria has the fastest internet speed in West Africa

Nigeria?s telecoms and IT sector has proven to have massive growth potential in the coming years; but the country must first overcome a number of key industry challenges before the sector can fulfill its potential. One of the largest challenges is the lack of reliable power supply to the region; however, deficiencies in ICT infrastructure must continue to be addressed.

Software piracy remains evidently rampant within the country as per a recent study released; the commercial value of unlicensed software installed in 2011 represented an 82% rate of piracy, nearly double the global rate of 42%.

The Nigerian government has launched a series of initiatives to reinforce the information and communications technology (ICT) sector within the region. These efforts include major investment programmes and partnerships to assist the sector in addressing some of the challenges that prevent the growth and development of the ICT sector. With the arrival of landed gateway cables into Nigeria, the radical innovation is contributing to improving ICT infrastructure and bridging the digital divide.

The 14,000-km fibre-optic submarine cable, named the West African Cable System (WACS), has a capacity of 5.12 terabytes per second (TBps), and began service earlier this year.

With promises of growth and development throughout the ICT sector in West Africa, Nigeria appears to be spearheading the growth as the latest state of the internet report was released. The recent report showed that Nigeria has overtaken South Africa in terms of Internet speed in less than eleven years after reforming its communications networks and market. The report also revealed that Nigeria has an average connection speed of 322kbps with a peak rate of 5674kbps; while South Africa?s average speed is faster at 496kbps, the country?s peak speed is only half that of Nigeria, at 2172kbps.

With strong support from its government and keen interest from major private sector players and the outlook for Nigeria, West African country?s ICT sector looks promising. As it continues to grow, there will be significant investment opportunities in the areas of infrastructural development, research and training, as well as cyber-security.

Nigeria boasted over 125 million total connected lines before the end of the last quarter in 2011 with its contribution to making the country one of the fastest growing economies of the world. These significant events included the implementation of SIM card registration by the Nigerian Communications Commission, e-registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the introduction of the mobile money policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The information and communication technologies (ICTs) markets within West Africa are being revolutionised by the rapid adoption of Internet-based services, wireless technologies and the convergence of previously separate ICTs including broadcasting, computing and communication.

The anticipated IT Leaders West Africa Summit will focus on the many challenges currently facing West Africa?s ICT industry, preventing enterprises within the region from reaching the international standards of first world nations. The summit will address today?s top ICT and operations issues, and technological advancements impacting the enterprise with strategic guidance and actionable tactics.

'The Voice' Results: Dez Duron And Cody Belew Eliminated; Top 6 Revealed For Season 3

The results are in! "The Voice" eliminated two more contestants: Dez Duron of Team Christina and Cody Belew of Team Cee Lo.

The Top 6 are: Cassadee Pope and Terry McDermott (Team Blake); Melanie Martinez and Amanda Brown (Team Adam); and Nicholas David (and his bun) and Trevin Hunte (Team Cee Lo).

With Dez's elimination, Christina Aguilera no longer has any contestants in the running to win Season 3 of "The Voice."

The real treat of the night was Cee Lo Green bringing together his teams from three seasons to perform his song "All I Need Is Love" with the Muppets. Vicci Martinez, Tony Vincent, Nakia, Jamar Rogers, MacKenzie Bourg, and more sang with Cee Lo in Las Vegas and then Kermit and Cee Lo -- clad in a mirrored green ensemble (hat included) -- sang "It's Not Easy Being Green." It brought Fozzie to tears.

Plus, Amanda Brown and Trevin Hunte put on an energetic -- and very shiny -- performance of Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night," while Melanie Martinez, Nicholas David, Terry McDermott and the now-eliminated Cody did an adorable rendition of Plain White T's "Rhythm of Love." Rounding out the group performances, Dez went out with a bang singing "Hate That I Love You" by Rihanna featuring Ne-Yo with Cassadee Pope.

"The Voice" continues on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

Women Give 2012: Older Women Give More than Men - Asian ...

by Ann Hoang

The Women?s Philanthropy Institute at the Center for Effective Philanthropy at Indiana University has just released its third research report on women donors. The series, named Women Give, builds on a growing body of research about the role and behaviors of female philanthropists. We all know giving motivations are shaped by personal experiences and values, so it should be no surprise that some differences between men and women, such as average income and life expectancy, might also produce different philanthropic behaviors.

While the 2010 report confirmed that there were significant differences between the giving patterns of single men and women in general, the focus of the 2012 report is placed on Baby Boomer and older women. Before this, little research had explored the ways that gender and age might affect giving preference, so the findings of this report provide some valuable insights for our work in philanthropy. These findings include:

- Baby Boomer and older women are more likely to give than their male counterparts in all giving levels. Of those who give, Baby Boomer and older women give 89% more (almost twice as much) to charity than men.

- Baby Boomer and older women in the top 25% of permanent income are more likely to give than their male counterparts. Of those who give, Baby Boomer and older women in the top 25% of permanent income give 156% more (more than 1.5 times more) to charity than men.

Interestingly, the study also lists constraints on giving by Baby Boomer and older women. It?s within this context that the findings are even more remarkable: despite income-limiting factors like risk aversion in financial decision-making, a longer life expectancy (thus higher likelihood of outliving their savings), and less time in the labor force, for example, older women still demonstrate a higher propensity to give to charity. The study doesn?t give much in the way of theories or conclusions on why this trend exists, but the results are no less enlightening.

At the very least, it is certainly affirming: because senior women age 50 and older own more than ? of the nation?s financial wealth (MassMutual Financial Group), this does bring some good news for the field of philanthropy.

Body of Turkish ex-leader shows signs of poisoning: paper

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - An autopsy on the exhumed body of Turkey's late President Turgut Ozal, who led the country out of military rule in the 1980s, has found evidence of poisoning, a newspaper reported on Monday.

There had long been rumors that Ozal, who died of heart failure in 1993 aged 65, was murdered by militants of the "deep state" - a shadowy nationalist strain within the Turkish establishment of the day. Ozal had angered some with his efforts to end a Kurdish insurgency and survived an assassination bid in 1988.

His body, dug up last month on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play in his death, contained the banned insecticide DDT and the related compound DDE at 10 times the normal level, Today's Zaman cited sources from the state Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK) as saying.

"Ozal was most likely poisoned with four separate substances," the paper reported the sources as saying, also naming the toxic metal cadmium and the radioactive elements americium and polonium as substances found in Ozal's remains.

Forensic institute officials declined to comment.

Suleyman Demirel, who followed Ozal as president, dismissed such allegations. "I don't agree with any of the allegations that Turgut Ozal was murdered," state-run Anatolian news agency reported Demirel as telling reporters.

Demirel, prime minister when Ozal died and subsequently president until 2000, did not elaborate.

Ozal, whose economic reforms easing the grip of the state on business helped shape modern Turkey, was in poor health before his death. After undergoing a triple heart bypass operation in the United States in 1987, he kept up a grueling schedule and remained overweight until he died.

His moves to end a Kurdish insurgency and create a Turkic union with central Asian states have been cited as motives for would-be enemies in "deep state", in which security establishment figures and criminal elements colluded.

It was Turkey's military leaders who appointed him as a minister after a period of military rule following a 1980 coup.

He went on to dominate Turkish politics as prime minister from 1983 to 1989. Parliament then elected him president, but those close to him believe his reform efforts displeased some in the security establishment.

While prime minister, Ozal survived an assassination attempt by a right-wing gunman in 1988 when he was shot at a party congress, injuring a finger.

Turkish political history has been littered with military coups, alleged anti-government plots and extra-judicial killings. A court is currently trying hundreds of people suspected of links to a nationalist underground network known as "Ergenekon" accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

A media report at the start of November said Ozal's autopsy had revealed high levels of the pesticide strychnine, but the ATK subsequently denied the report.

The head of the ATK has said the institute aims to complete its work in December and that its report would be handed over to prosecutors.

Profiles of a Foster Family #2 - Connecticut Foster Care & Adoption

Profiles of a Foster Family ? James and Jimmie

Have you sometimes met someone and instantly wished they were your surrogate parents or grandparents because of the obvious loving and calm character they had. Well, this interviewer did meet such a couple and amazingly enough ? this couple decided to use their love to pour into foster children.

James and Jimmie have been doing foster care for 25 years. Their kids had all grown up, but they felt as if they had been given so much love by God that they wanted to give it to those who needed it most. So, they did.

James and Jimmie initially started this journey with a different agency than CRI where they had one child at first and then another. They raised them like their own from age 8 to the end of high school. Now one is in college to be a lawyer and the other is married with 3 children. They are still in close contact. Who wouldn?t want to stay in contact with a mom and day that desires to make kids happy and fulfill their dreams?

After those two kids, Jimmie and James took at break. Jimmie wanted to re-evaluate why she and her husband did what they did. She shared on the importance of being completely dedicated to this work. Luckily for the kids in foster care, they decided to continue. At this time, they switched agencies to CRI. Since they had been in foster care for so long, they knew what they were getting into, what to expect and how to measure what CRI had to offer. Jimmie expressed that she observed the staff as ?professional, friendly, open-hearted, caring, and interested in how we feel as the foster parents. It went beyond the class. We were all part of the team. They try to make good matches of children to families and make sure that connections are good.?

In 3 years, Jimmie says her initial evaluation has proven true. They have had a couple of struggles during those times and their workers have checked in to see how they were doing, not just the child. She hears from her social worker 1-2x a week and if he isn?t available when she needs him, there is always another worker. If they have a need, CRI tries to meet it. They are so happy with CRI that they have referred others to them. ?They are still training me. Every month something is different and they stay working with me,? Jimmie shares.

When asked what Jimmie would share with prospective foster parents, Jimmie suggests, ?Just because a child has a bad background with another family, it doesn?t mean it will be with me. Remember that whatever they have been through was not their fault. If a child is struggling with behavior or school, it doesn?t mean they can?t overcome it. No one should ever be in for it for the money. It is hard work and we have to be committed for the right reasons. I cannot take the place of a child?s mama or daddy, but I can do so much to make their life better and give them a chance.?

?Nuf said?and once again?where is the sign up list to be the surrogate child to this family?

Razer updates Orochi mouse with new laser, longer battery life

It's nearly vacation time, you've got your second-gen Razer Blade nestled in wrapping paper below the Festivus pole, and all you need is a fancy new mouse to go along with that fancy new gaming laptop. Razer's apparently got you covered in that department as well, refreshing its Orochi wireless gaming mouse just in time for the upcoming holiday. Sporting a new laser with a 6400 dpi 4G sensor, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity (as well as wired support) and 30 hours of advertised battery life on two AAs (double the previous model), the Orochi promises to "take out the competition with deadly accuracy." Here's hoping Razer's not talking about beating your opponents to death with the mouse, and just means that figuratively. The company's already got the new Orochi up for sale on its website for $69.99 / €69.99, which we'd suggest heading to sooner than later should you want to beat the holiday madness.

Proving that you are in pain

Your pain is real, but it?s hard to prove. People react differently to pain. Our thresholds are different and pain can affect us in varying ways. It?s not easy to measure in any objective way. We?ve seen two people with similar injuries have very different pain reactions. One worker with a shoulder injury might recover in a few months and get back to work, while another might never recover.

One key to proving pain is having medical testimony that backs up your claims. Your treating physician?s opinion on your pain can make all the difference. Being honest and communicating well with your doctor is important. One of the worst things you can do is try to suffer through the pain and not follow up with your doctor.

A related issue is talking to your doctor, in detail, about how you were injured. If you don?t explain what you do at work (heavy lifting, for example), they aren?t going to be able to connect the dots and realize that you have a work injury. Again, their opinion on how you were injured is essential to the success of your case. The insurance company would love to argue that your injury was caused by skiing on the weekends and not your job duties.

Another key is respecting your pain. Follow your doctor?s orders and obey any restrictions. Don?t push yourself at work or at home on the weekends. Some insurance companies hire private investigators to follow injured workers and catch them doing something they claimed they couldn?t do. Even honest people get caught in this trap because they push themselves to do things despite the pain. Your daily activities need to be consistent with what you?re claiming. Be honest about your pain, and make sure to act accordingly, even when you?re off duty.

Because pain is subjective, you have to work hard and be careful when proving it. If you fail to get a solid medical opinion or get caught doing something that would indicate you?re not actually in pain, you could lose your case. Your credibility is extremely important in a work injury case, especially if your case ends up before an arbitrator.

End User Computing Is Empowering the Non-Programmer

?

End user computing is empowering the non-programmer to make complete use of the cloud based services that are available today at our disposal. By integrating the end user into the advanced computing environment, it aims to provide a more holistic approach to problem-solving while using high-end computing at a back-end level. The technical proficiency of the end user is not that important and the overall aptitude towards the work is demanded.

?

?

When we talk about an ?end user? what we mean is a person who uses the complex software or the network service by logging into it by a specified user name or user ID and is most often not a programmer or someone highly tech-savvy. The ?end user? is the target user or buyer of the complex service or application which is developed by a programmer. A successful end user computing model must comprise of a highly efficient service desk and client-support system apart from asset management services, messaging and collaboration services and infrastructure applications. Most IT giants are now offering these over the cloud via cloud based services.

?

?

Most end user computing interfaces are built using fourth or fifth generation computer programming languages like MAPPER, SQL and ICAD. The key is to make the interface easy-to-use for a non-programmer and enable them to conduct or carry out anything ranging from something as easy as clicking some buttons or modifying data using a controlled scripting language.

?

?

Cloud based services are making good use of the concept of ?end user computing?. With customers becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of functioning over the cloud, the end user is being given more control over the IT infrastructure. In cloud computing, basically hardware and software computing resources are delivered to the end user as a chargeable service over a trusted network. It delivers the platform, infrastructure and the applications to the user in a bundle which is represented in the logical diagram in the shape of a cloud and hence the term ?cloud computing?. The major players (but certainly not the only players) on today?s date in this arena are Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft. Each of them is coming up with a host of applications and services via ?the cloud?.

?

?

Why are so many small and medium scale businesses taking to these cloud based services? The most obvious reason is the reduction in cost. The ?cloud? vendors are giving them the liberty to pay-per-use for software, hardware, platforms and storage space. They are enabling them to get the super high end technical knowhow, which earlier was only available to large businesses, at a much lower cost. The disadvantage of migrating businesses into ?the cloud? is the high-risk factor. If due to some risk unexpected reason, the services become unavailable for a long time, it could lead to major problems for many businesses. Also, the privacy of data is a concern for many since all the data is sent to ?the cloud?. But these services, without any doubt, are boosting end user computing as the target for all the computing resources is ultimately the end user.

?

End user computing is trying to achieve integration of the end user into the complex computing system. Cloud based services are being provided by most of the IT giants nowadays.

California fires coach Jeff Tedford

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? Jeff Tedford made a downtrodden program relevant as coach at California, putting out competitive teams for a decade, developing dozens of NFL players and spearheading a facilities upgrade.

When he was unable to match his own early on-field success in recent years he was fired after 11 years as coach.

Cal fired Tedford on Tuesday, ending a tenure that began with great promise and ended with a disappointing run of mediocrity capped by his worst season as coach.

"This was a difficult decision made after considerable thought and analysis and reflection," athletic director Sandy Barbour said. "Jeff Tedford is a good man who has brought great success and celebration and to his university and deserves to occupy a place of honor in the Cal family. His legacy is unquestioned."

Tedford engineered an impressive turnaround for the Bears after taking over a one-win team following the 2001 season. He won a school-record 82 games, churned out numerous NFL prospects and was a major factor in a $321 million stadium renovation.

But after winning 10 games twice in his first five years and taking a share of the 2006 conference title, Tedford was unable to keep the Bears near the top of the Pac-12 conference anymore.

The program bottomed out this season, losing the final five games to finish 3-9 for Tedford's worst season. The Bears lost to rival Stanford for the third straight season and the year was capped by the most lopsided losses of Tedford's career, a 59-17 home loss to Oregon followed by a season-ending 62-14 loss at Oregon State.

Barbour met with Tedford the previous two days to discuss the future of the program and announced her decision Tuesday.

"I certainly wanted the answer to be Jeff," she said. "But I have that obligation to do what's right for Cal. It was a matter of did I believe that we could turn around some of these worrisome trends competitively and academically. Ultimately my conclusion was it wouldn't be deep enough to take us to where we need to be."

Tedford released a statement thanking the school for the opportunity to coach there.

"All involved can feel a great sense of pride with their sacrifice, contributions and commitment that have made it possible to have the winningest tenure in Cal football history," he said. "We all can be very proud of helping to build a renovated Memorial Stadium that will have a positive impact on many athletes, fans and staff members for years to come."

Tedford is still owed $6.9 million over the final three years of his contract, although Barbour said the sides are working on a settlement. She also said no state funds or student fees will be used to pay Tedford or the new coach.

Barbour said she would consider both NFL and college coaches and wanted to find a replacement quickly. Cal which will be aided by the firm of DHR International in the search.

The Cal players gave Tedford a standing ovation after getting the news.

"Everybody really respects coach a lot and loves coach a lot," offensive lineman Jordan Rigsbee said. "It really meant a lot to us to send him off in that way."

Tedford established himself at Cal as a quarterback guru, helping develop Kyle Boller and Aaron Rodgers into first-round picks in his first three seasons after tutoring No. 3 overall pick Joey Harrington as offensive coordinator at Oregon.

But if there was one reason for Tedford's downfall it was his inability to find another big-time quarterback after Rodgers left following the 2004 season. The Bears ran through a group of pedestrian passers like Joe Ayoob, Nate Longshore, Kevin Riley, Brock Mansion and Zach Maynard.

The inability to pair an elite passer with the top-level talent at the skill positions proved to be Tedford's undoing. The Bears often put together some of the best recruiting classes on the West Coast and had 40 players drafted into the NFL, including eight first-round picks, under Tedford's leadership.

Cal had 25 players on NFL rosters at the start of this season, ninth most in the nation. That includes stars like Rodgers, DeSean Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. But those star players were unable to get the Bears back to the Rose Bowl for the first time since the 1958 season.

The closest Cal came was in Rodgers' final season in 2004 when the Bears had a 10-1 regular season, losing 23-17 to eventual national champion Southern California. Texas beat out Cal for a Rose Bowl spot much to the dismay of the fan base. The Bears shared the conference title with USC in 2006 but lost the head-to-head matchup and settled for the Holiday Bowl.

Cal's fortunes turned downward that next season after a 5-0 start. With the Bears poised to move into the No. 1 spot in the polls following a loss by LSU, they lost to Oregon State in the closing seconds. Starting with that game, Tedford had a 34-37 record over his final 5? seasons.

The Bears even got passed by Stanford in the Pac-12 hierarchy to the dismay of the alumni, with the Cardinal in position to get that Rose Bowl bid that has eluded Cal over the years despite losing star quarterback Andrew Luck to the NFL.

Adding to negatives for Tedford was news last month that Cal graduated only 48 percent of football players who entered school between 2002 and 2005 ? the lowest rate in the Pac-12. Barbour said in a letter to donors that the low graduation rate was a "great concern."

The one bright spot in Tedford's final seasons came when Memorial Stadium reopened this fall following the major renovation. The modernized stadium and adjacent $150 million on-campus High Performance Center finally give Cal the facilities to compete with the rest of the conference.

While Tedford's work rebuilding the program and fundraising for the project were integral in its success, his successor will ultimately reap the benefits.

"This is a great job," Barbour said. "It's been made better by Jeff Tedford. This is a very attractive job that will attract a number of candidates that will meet these criteria. We will have an opportunity to make a great choice."

India says 2008 Mumbai attacker Kasab hanged

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India hanged Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the only militant to have survived the 2008 attacks on the financial capital Mumbai, the Home Ministry said on Wednesday.

In August, India's Supreme Court upheld Kasab's death sentence over the attack on a string of targets in Mumbai that killed 166 people. Kasab was a Pakistani national.

"Ajmal Kasab was executed at 7.30 this morning," Home ministry spokesman K. S. Dhatwalia said.

The execution at Yerawada Prison in Pune, near Mumbai, came just hours after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected a mercy plea by Kasab, who had said he belonged to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

It was the first time a capital sentence had been carried out in India since 2004.

Many foreigners, some of India's wealthy business elite, and poor train commuters were killed by 10 Pakistani gunmen in a three-day rampage through some of Mumbai's best-known landmarks, including two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre.

Kasab was filmed walking through Mumbai's main train station carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and a knapsack on his back. Nearly 60 people were gunned down in the crowded station.

India accuses Pakistan-based militants of organizing the attacks, saying Islamabad is failing to act against those behind the raids. Pakistan denies involvement and says it is prosecuting seven suspected militants for their role.

Kuhl-Linscomb Plans To Turn Googie Penguin Arms Apartments ...

About a year after snatching up the Penguin Arms building at 2902 Revere St., Dan Linscomb and Pam Kuhl-Linscomb announce to the Chronicle?s Lisa Gray their plans to incorporate Arthur Moss?s pedigreed 1950 Googie-style apartment building into the multi-building streetside campus of their Upper Kirby home-furnishings-and-knick-knacks empire: ?In about a year, after a round of renovation and restoration, they plan to open the Penguin Arms as a showroom,? Gray writes. ?Maybe, Dan says, they?ll reserve a little piece as an apartment, so they can literally live above the shop.?

* * *

The Kuhl-Linscomb shopping campus already includes 6 formerly residential structures along Steel St., along with a main space in a strip center facing all the action in the Whole Foods Market parking lot across Argonne St. But the Penguin Arms won?t be isolated, Gray writes. The owners plan to tear down the building?s parking structure and add ?some sort of link through the unused alleyway so customers can walk in air-conditioning? through the back yard to Building 2. ?It?ll be tasteful, Dan promises: ?This sounds overblown, but like the Guggenheim or the Louvre additions ? the addition its own contemporary thing, but not overpowering, not obtrusive.??
