Hans Zimmer Writes Song for Aurora Shooting Victims

Hans Zimmer, the composer who wrote the score for ?The Dark Knight Rises,? has written another song ? this one dedicated to the victims of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., The Associated Press reported. Mr. Zimmer, who announced that he recorded the song in London in the days after the killings, posted the song, ?Aurora,? on his Facebook page on Friday, saying it ?is dedicated to those who lost their lives and were affected by the tragedy.?

The eight-and-a-half-minute song is selling for donations from 10 cents to $2,500 on iTunes and Moontoast and all the proceeds, Mr. Zimmer said, are being donated to the Aurora Victim Relief Fund.

Activists: Renewed bombardment, clashes in Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists are reporting renewed bombardments and clashes in rebel-held sectors of Syria's largest city, Aleppo, as fighting there stretches into its 11th day.

The battle for Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub with around 3 million inhabitants, has now lasted longer than the rebel assault on the capital Damascus that regime troops crushed earlier in July.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday that the rebel bastion of Sakhour in the northeast of Aleppo was being shelled and that clashes had broken out between rebels and government forces elsewhere in the city.

The U.N. has estimated that 200,000 people have fled Aleppo during the fighting. Refugees that have made it to Turkey describe a city devastated by the shelling.

Mississippi Couple Told to Marry Elsewhere After Church Members Complain About "Black Wedding"

The day before their wedding, Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson of Jackson, MS, were told that they would have to find a new location for the event because, as the pastor put it, other members were uncomfortable with a black couple being married there.?

The First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs does not exclude black members, which is precisely why pastor?Stan Weatherford was so shocked by the response to the wedding. Aiming to do the right thing, Weatherford?performed the ceremony at a different church.?

The church will conduct internal meetings to decide how to proceed. As expected, nobody is willing to come forward and admit to having an issue with a "black wedding," but there were reportedly five or six people who voiced just that complaint. A number of members have spoken out against the decision after the fact, saying they were unaware of it.

What's truly unfortunate about the situation is that Te'Andrea Wilson had been attending First Baptist for a year along with her father, and her uncle was a custodian at the church.

Long Live Saab! Jay Leno Remembers the Quirky Carmaker

Somewhere over in Sweden there's a Dumpster full of Saab letterhead, employee ID badges, and day planners. There are guys going through what once were Saab's offices, hanging auction tags on the furniture, computers, printers, and water coolers.

Saab went bankrupt in December 2011; in June, a company called National Electric Vehicle Sweden AN (NEVS) announced it would buy the marque, reportedly to make electric vehicles bearing the venerable name. NEVS is owned 51/49 by Chinese and Japanese interests, respectively, and China is the initial target market for the next generation of Saabs. But the Saab I knew and loved is gone, and I miss it.

When I was a kid, Saabs were unique. I first rode in one while I was in high school. A friend's mother had an old model with a two-stroke engine and a differential incorporating a freewheel hub system like the one on a 10-speed bicycle. It didn't go fast, but when my friend's mom took her foot off the accelerator pedal, there was no compression braking. The car just kept rolling along. I was fascinated.

Saabs were front-drivers when every American car had rear drive. Their two-stroke, three-cylinder engines sounded like popcorn machines?poppoppoppaaawwwp!?while other cars were muffled into silence. The first Saab car, the 1950 model 92, was built around an aerodynamically slick unibody. It rode on an all-independent torsion bar suspension and used something called rack-and-pinion steering. It was impossible to over-rev a Saab's engine because it ran out of power before the redline. So you just threw your boot at the gas pedal and shifted up until there was evidence of forward momentum. All that unconventional engineering led to good fuel economy: Saabs got better than 25 mpg.

In the '50s and '60s, owning a Saab meant more than having an odd car in your garage; it was a lifestyle choice. With that two-stroke engine, you had to premix your gas and oil. So you trudged to the gas station with two 5-gallon cans, filled them up most of the way with gasoline, and then topped them off with oil at a 50:1 ratio. After a shaking to mix them up?and remember, gas weighs more than 6 pounds a gallon?you could fill the Saab's fuel tank. But there was never any oil sump to drain and virtually no other routine engine maintenance. Under the hood a clamp held an extra quart of premix oil.

On cold mornings, if you wanted to warm up a Saab's engine more quickly, you pulled a chain dangling from the dashboard to lower a "shade" that blocked airflow to the radiator. Naturally, the cabin heater was phenomenal.

My Saab is a 1958 model 93B. It doesn't have the key on the floor like later Saabs, but this was the first year for the one-piece front windshield, and the doors are hinged at the back, suicide style. With a 750-cc engine making about 33 hp, it's not fast. But you can go 70 mph down the road with four people in it. It has cruise control too; just put your foot to the floor and keep it there.

To me, however, my Saab's most fascinating detail is the water pump that's located on the back end of the generator. The Swedes could made it work, but imagine if a British car company had tried this. At best it would have functioned correctly; at worst it would have electrocuted anyone who touched it.

Beyond their engineering idiosyncrasies, though, Saabs were effective. The company was building rigid, lightweight, and aerodynamic cars when other manufacturers ignored these considerations in their engineering. A Saab didn't look or drive like anything else on the road, and it attracted buyers to match.

It seemed for a while that every time a professor at a college in New England was awarded tenure, he or she got a Saab to go along with it. Intellectuals, eccentrics, and other free-minded, countercultural types seemed to adopt Saabs almost instinctively. The author Kurt Vonnegut even owned a Saab dealership?Saab Cape Cod?in the late '50s.

When Saab switched to Ford-sourced four-stroke V-4 engines in 1967, the brand lost some of its charm for me. Of course, Saab did some innovative things after that. The 1978 Saab 99 Turbo ushered in a new era of efficiency, and the later 900 Turbo was sophisticated. Then GM bought Saab, intending to turn it into a BMW competitor. Suddenly there were Saabs that were Subarus with new badges or Chevy TrailBlazers with their ignition key on the floor. Without quirkiness, Saab became just another car.

Nigeria: Senate President Calls For Censorship of Social Media

The President of Nigeria's Senate, David Mark, recently advocated clamping down on social media in the country.?Many netizens perceived his comments as a declaration of battle on the Nigeria's?webosphere.

According to Tuale Naija:

Mark had last Thursday, while declaring open a two-day retreat for Senate Press corps in Umuahia, Abia State, reportedly said the check became necessary as people used the media to demean their leaders. He added that there was no opportunity for retraction of information in such media.

Tuale Naija?quotes?the Senate President in his own words:

??We need to change our attitude on how we report things about our country and we should emulate the foreign reporters who never report negative things about their countries.?

David Mark, Senate President of Nigeria (Photo source: amazonaws.com)

Why should the social media bother Mr Mark so much as to legislate it's gagging: Blogger, Chinedu Ekeke deduces as follows:

Netizens: the Nigerian politician's nightmare?

Mr Mark is justified, because, you see, there?s so much?money?can buy; and there?s even much more plenty of?money?can buy. The more?money you make?without working, the more you want to spend without sweat. He pays himself N600 million from Nigeria?s treasury in one year. That isn?t heavenly or biblical year. It is earthly year as we know it; twelve calendar months, the one within which?Barack Obama, the?United States president, earns N60 million.

What Mr. Mark pays himself in one year is the salary of a US president for ten (yes, ten!) good years. What Nigeria?s number three citizen takes home, legally, in one year, is what the number one citizen of the world?s biggest economy, and only?remaining?super-power, earns in ten years? You see why he has to checkmate social media? You can?t have access to such amounts of free money?without being sensitive to any avenue through which opposition rears its envious head??So for taking home N600 million for doing nothing, why will David Mark not feel threatened by social media?

Nigerian neitizens have jumped gatekeepers!

It was easy for him to buy up the entire mainstream media peopled by brown-envelope-seeking journalists and editors in a hurry to join the resource-grabbing frenzy of those who rule Nigeria. His Ghana-must-go bags were handy for willing media people who had no regards for the sacred role the society, and their jobs, had thrust upon them. Today, Mark can?t control what gets into the new media. He can?t control the number of people who read just a tweet, or Facebook post or blog post,?detailing?how much David Mark grabs monthly from the purse of a nation in pathetic poverty. He can?t control who reads this piece or who doesn?t. He can?t pull down this website or the other ones linked to it through which this piece will be read by thousands or millions of Nigerians. And this is why he is troubled.

For one who once said that telephones are not for the poor?

As Babangida?s minister of communication, he told whoever cared to?listen?to perish the thoughts of making telephone available to Nigerians. He stated, clearly, that telephone wasn?t for the poor. It was for the rich, eaters of hundreds of millions of naira from Nigeria?s commonwealth. Today, the senator?watches?even roadside mechanics clutching their phones, reading the internet and seeing how much of a curse to them this government has become. If you were Mark, you?d be troubled too.

Once a soldier, always?

David Mark's career in the Nigerian Army is highlighted in his online biography:

David Mark had an exciting knowledge filled experience as a young telecommunications engineer in the Army and gradually rising from the position of a Junior officer to the position of a Senior officer??After He graduated from Nigeria's apex military training school, the Command and Staff College (CSC) in Jaji, Kaduna, he was posted to the Corps of signals as Commandant??During the David Mark's political appointment in the military he was probably the youngest member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), the highest decision making body in the country then. Even the discerning critiques of the militray politics knew that Mark was a very influential member of the AFRC.

It is therefore not?awkward that with this background, Nigeria's Senate President will certainly have no love lost for social media. The reactions by Nigerian netizens are as snatching as his remarks.

Chinedu Ekweke's (@ekekeee) blog post went viral on the Nigerian's blogosphere. It was a beautiful response to David Mark's comments and enjoyed many re-tweets. But soon after, complains of inability to access his blog flourished on Twitter.

15 magical pieces of tech that need to stop

8 hrs.

They were supposed to make everything better. And maybe they did, a little. But it's time for them to go away now. Sorry, QR codes. It's been real.?

?1. QR Codes

Imagine a hyperlink, except instead of actual readable text that you can type in, it's some weird ziggurat that gives no hint of where it's going. Also, instead of clicking on it, you have to take a picture of it with your camera, and you're probably going to have to take that picture three or four times before it works, and a lot of the time it's going to send you to either a non-mobile site or a dead link. If they all disappeared tomorrow, not one person in the entire world would care, not at all.

2. Routers

For some reason, they all look like they were made in 1995 and most of them act that way too. Everything they do would be much better in a scaled down, Airport-Express-style dongle. Time to burn this one down and start again.

3. Browser plugins

Flash is pulling out of the mobile world (after years of trying to break in) and Silverlight is ruining lives on a daily basis. Soon HTML5 will replace them entirely ? browser plugins don't exist on the iPhone or iPad and they won't exist on Windows 8 RT ?? but in the meantime there are a lot of websites with gaping holes in them, like a newspaper attacked by old lady clipping coupons.

4. Traffic cameras

The?rule was, if a cop caught you speeding, you got a ticket. It was a great system, both for the Smokey-and-the-Bandit factor and because, if you were only a little bit over the line, the officer would usually let it slide. Mailing tickets to people just because they got from point A to point B a little ahead of the curve is cheating, and it moves us towards a creepy automotive panopticon where the force of law is both intangible and omnipresent. But mostly, it's just lame.

5. Inductive charging?

Another idea that's been kicking around for a while without ever taking off. If it's not built into the phone, like the Palm Pre, it's not any easier than plugging it in.

6. Bluetooth audio

This started out as a good idea ? especially the speakers ? but it took 15 years to produce a decent product. Time to call it a day. We're better off with speaker wire.

7. The remote control

True story: I recently visited a friend who was housesitting, and it took us 10 minutes to figure out how to turn on the TV. There were three remotes, and each one had 40 buttons on it, except for the Apple TV remote, which didn't have a power button. Just put it in an app.

8. The cable box?

Speaking of which, here's a strange box that requires another remote control. Destroy! Or get it over with and shove it inside of an?Xbox or Apple TV already.

9. Software license keys?

Hard to enter, easy to crack. Authentication shouldn't be this difficult.

10. Cables For everything

Too many cables. Toomanycables. Too many, cables. Too.?Many cables.

11. The printer/scanner/fax

A surprising number of people still get one of these when they buy a computer, even though there's no reason to do any of these three things, and if you ever run out of ink or toner you will suffer the tortures of the damned. The sooner we stop expecting paper copies of things, the better.

12. Blu-Ray?

A lot of loose copies of Transformers 3 were handed out trying to make this one happen. And the movie looked great! Unfortunately, nobody you know owns a Blu-Ray player, and nobody wants to make a computer that deals with them. You're better off streaming.

13. The power brick

It's enough to make you wish we'd stuck with direct current.

14. Facebook comments

Designed to bring civility to web comments by attaching real people's names to them. Because if you know Richard Morris here is the person saying crazy things, he won't say them, right? Wrong. It continues to be a bottomless will of spiritual death and plain-old web-design misery.

15. Standalone anti-virus software?

It's crazy that this still exists. Just bake it into the OS already.

We tax income ? why not tax wealth? New study on offshore trillions ...

Felix Salmon, Reuters finance blogger, and Ben White, ?Morning Money? and economy reporter at Politico, analyze a study published by the Tax Justice Network that finds that offshore accounts ? not including those held by Americans ? contain somewhere between $21 trillion and $32 trillion in untaxed funds.

Salmon says there?s nothing necessarily wrong with storing your wealth elsewhere, but argues that a wealth tax ? as opposed to an income tax ? might be needed in the U.S. ?There is no real country in the world which can effectively tax wealth. What this report complains about is, ?Look at all this wealth, we could make a lot of money if we just taxed a little bit of it.? But countries don?t have wealth taxes. I think, personally, that maybe the United States should have a wealth tax,? he says.

(AP Photo/Denver Post, RJ Sangosti, Pool)

(AP) ? James Holmes spent a year in a small neuroscience doctoral program, surrounded by scientists and roughly three dozen classmates delving into the inner workings of the brain.

The University of Colorado, Denver, isn't saying if they had any warning signs.

Experts say, however, the intimacy of the program and its focus on the brain may not have been enough for staff and students to detect that Holmes was on a course that police say ended with a deadly rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.

Supported by a prestigious federal grant, Holmes, 24, was in the first year of a program at the Anschutz Medical Campus dedicated to neuroscience, studying such topics as how the brain works or malfunctions or helping develop drugs to treat epilepsy and other disorders.

But it is not behavioral science or psychology, experts say.

David Eagleman, who runs the Initiative on Neuroscience and the Law at Baylor University, said some neuroscientists are experts in mental illnesses and aberrant behavior, but others spend most of their time studying molecular chemistry.

"It's really only a fraction of professors" who could identify a simmering mental disorder, Eagleman said. "Many people in neuroscience are not specialized in the issue of picking up mental illness ... There are plenty of people who just study mice and cats and stuff like that."

Holmes is accused of methodically stockpiling weapons and explosives at work and at home that police say he used to kill 12 people and wound 58 more at a movie theater Friday in nearby Aurora. Police say he also booby-trapped his apartment with the intent to kill police officers.

Holmes' arraignment hearing is on Monday.

Attention continued to focus on victims of the attack and their grieving families, many of whom turned on Tuesday to the grim task of preparing for funerals. Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the shooting and stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims near the movie theater where they were shot.

Authorities say Holmes began shopping for firearms while studying neuroscience. He joined the program in June 2011 after receiving a National Institutes of Health grant to cover his tuition and provide a $26,000 annual living allowance.

The school refuses to say what specifically Holmes studied. But an online syllabus listed him as making a presentation in May during a class called "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."

In early June, Holmes took a standard oral exam that ends a graduate student's first year. The school will not say whether he passed, but Holmes filed paperwork to withdraw from the program just days later. He never provided a written explanation for his departure.

"He had, as is now common knowledge, excellent academic credentials," said Barry Shur, dean of the university's graduate program.

Shur said the graduate program is "like a family" in which faculty carefully monitor students' progress.

"It would be a logical step to assume there were people in that program who worked closely with him and would have the expertise to assess his behavior," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, a former FBI profiler and the author of the book "Dangerous Instincts: How Gut Feelings Betray Us."

"But being able to recognize concerning, troubling behavior does not mean you can prevent a mass homicide," O'Toole said. "There are many people at a university level who act quirky and strange and don't go out and commit mass murder."

Academics studying the human brain may not have the same ability to size up threats as someone who makes his living spending time with people firing guns, O'Toole said.

Glenn Rotkovich, owner of a private Colorado gun range outside Denver, quickly concluded there was something wrong with Holmes.

Holmes applied to join the range in late June. But Rotkovich said that after calling Holmes back and hearing a "bizarre" voice mail message ? spoken in a strange, low-pitched voice with heavy breathing ? he concluded he didn't want Holmes as a member.

"I flagged him to people and said, if he shows up, I don't trust him," Rotkovich said.

Holmes apparently never went to the range.

The university's silence on the year Holmes spent there contributed to the mystery surrounding his motivations. Administrators refuse to say whether faculty or students saw signs of dangerous behavior in Holmes. Campus police said they had no information on Holmes before the attack.

Holmes remained in solitary confinement Tuesday in Arapahoe County jail, a day after appearing bleary-eyed and disoriented in his initial court appearance. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Working to build their case, a team of lawyers from the district attorney's office spent about 90 minutes inside the movie multiplex where the shooting occurred. Crews were starting to encircle the building with a chain link fence while people continued to flock to a memorial nearby for the victims.

Relatives of those who died were bracing for a string of funeral services, the first of which ? for Gordon Cowden, the oldest of those killed ? was planned for Wednesday. Meanwhile, a woman whose husband remains in a coma after being shot in the head gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the same hospital Tuesday.

A profile for a man whose name and appearance matched Holmes has been removed from a dating website. Match.com spokesman Matthew Traub on Tuesday confirmed reports on TMZ.com and elsewhere that the profile was posted before the movie theater massacre. Traub would not comment on whether Match.com believes Holmes actually posted the profile.

The profile included the question, "Will you visit me in prison?" and said, "I spend a lot of time thinking about the future, mind (equals) blown."

The profile photo showed a man whose hair is reddish orange, similar to Holmes' hair when he appeared in court Monday.

New details emerged about the night of the shooting.

Clad in head-to-toe combat gear, Holmes allegedly burst into a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire. Friends Stephanie Davies and Allie Young, who attended, said the gunman moved around the room yelling and seemingly targeting people.

"He would shout, 'What are you doing? I said stand up!' And he would pick people up. I saw him stand over someone. I just see hair and him holding the shirt and 'boom,'" said Davies, 21.

Outside Colorado, men accused of making threats during or after other screenings of the Batman film have been arrested in separate incidents in Maine, Arizona and Southern California, underscoring moviegoers' anxieties about security.

In Colorado, the shooting has prompted a sudden surge in gun sales.

In three days, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm. That was 25 percent greater than the average Friday-to-Sunday period in 2012, and 43 percent greater than the same period the week prior.

In Arizona, Jeff Serdy, owner of A.J.I. Sporting Goods in Apache Junction, estimated he saw up to 40 percent more traffic than usual in the two days after the killings.

"I looked out on the floor and said to myself, 'Whoa, look at all these people,'" Serdy said, noting many customers expressed concern that lawmakers may use the shooting to try to pass gun restrictions. Political analysts say there is little appetite in Congress for such laws.

(AP) ? The blindingly bright hot pink carpet at the Teen Choice Awards was full of rising fashion stars unafraid to break the rules in equally colorful styles.

Ponytailed Teen Choice co-host Demi Lovato wore a flashy yellow-and-silver sequined minidress with long feathers to the Sunday ceremony.

"Well, I chose it because I'm just really, I'm in a really fun mood, and I wanted to 'wow' people when I stepped out on the carpet," smiled Lovato. "And I don't know, the host has to wear something special, it's the Teen Choice Awards."

New pop star Carly Rae Jepsen wore a beige blazer paired with a matching miniskirt and dark green printed palm trees accompanied by a black clutch and chunky black Aldo platforms. "It just felt kind of suited for Teen Choice. The surf boards. Why not?" said Jepsen.

Zoe Saldana wore a balloon-hem printed dress by Jonathan Saunders, and Zooey Deschanel chose a cheerful cobalt-blue cocktail dress by Monique Lhuillier.

The youngest Kardashian sisters, Kendal and Kylie Jenner, opted for dark dresses.

"We wanted to be different," said Kendall Jenner. Added Kylie: "I picked this dress, just because I really liked it, and then to coordinate, she picked a dark one."

Miranda Cosgrove of "iCarly" wore a short silver metallic sequined dress with subtle jewelry, while Victoria Justice wore a long animal-print dress with a bejeweled black belt, sleek straight hair and beige heels.

"Vampire Diaries" fashionista Nina Dobrev wore a teal strapless J. Mendel dress, gold strappy heels and a soft Grecian braid. "The Teen Choice Awards are all about having fun and being young," she said. "Just playing around and feeling liberated, I guess."

This light-hearted type of corporate enjoyment should not be taken as well critically. Make confident all of your ?awards? are for items that happen in the place of work. If someone is constantly late, award them a tongue-in-cheek ?time keeping? award. Be confident not to cause offence and maintain the night fun and casual.

If your team measurement boosts to far more than twenty folks or so, or if you have an obstacle for your group that you want to boost as the conversation problems of the new group chief, groups that have joined together on yet another group, or queries, the kind of crew activities could truly be counter effective ? so be watchful if you are a modest group, and a rather strong team already in the atmosphere. 2nd Classroom Staff Developing: Many people feel of the classroom = uninteresting as most of our lives when we are in the classroom, we are bored to death. A group constructing event in standard is utilized to enhance communication, develop morale and offer entertainment to all. Companies can think about straightforward social activities, team bonding periods or individual improvement activities. Crew improvement pursuits support people and groups to try out various methods of fixing a difficulty. There are some occasions that are held on a big-scale, such as Amazing Race and Company Survivor. Remarkable Race is a major Tv set present whereby teams race about the planet and compete to attain different locations. An amount of firms maintain equivalent competitions. These kinds of game titles involve a collection of difficult projects and call for proper organizing and coordination between staff members.

Blend men and women from various useful groups. The occasion must preferably supply an opportunity to mingle with and develop relationships with everybody, even these outdoors the primary staff. This introduces an element of variety and stops the development of buddy gangs within the business. It also destroys prototypes and improves understanding among groups in the exact same organization.

One of the greatest staff developing pursuits I ever before went to was run by a builders? suppliers. Their firm employees hosted an outside clay pigeon capturing celebration. Above the previous yr, some members had been qualified to shoot and teach others some experienced realized sliver support and other people experienced discovered to cook. For acquiring the very best in team creating functions, availing the professional providers is thought of to be the best option. The specialists can assist to strategy and execute the applications for the personnel of the company.

The dilemma with planning this sort of occasion is choosing what is the best way to inspire your function drive. It can appear like an countless task to uncover the appropriate location. This is in which an knowledgeable activities administration business can step in and consider the reins.

The days of getting up and talking and then sitting down have earlier. Andrea Hurst & Associates Literary Management ...

By: Andrea Hurst

With a publishing industry that is ever in flux, it can be hard for an aspiring author to figure out what information is relevant and what she needs to do to be successful. Recognizing this, literary agent Andrea Hurst and editor/writer Cherise Hensley present a series of weekly interviews with publishing industry specialists. The AUTHORNOMICS Series features literary agents, editors, authors, marketing experts and more talking about their opinions on the publishing industry, writing, and what a writer needs to know.

Interview with Jane Friedman

Jane Friedman is web editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, and the former publisher of Writer?s Digest. She has spoken on writing, publishing, and the future of media at more than 200 events since 2001, including South by Southwest, BookExpo America, and the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. Find out more at JaneFriedman.com.

?

You have been in the publishing business in various roles for many years, and are an expert in all areas of publishing.? You?ve worked as an editor, a writer, a journalist, a blogger and a professor. What are some most rewarding experiences in your career so far?
The rewarding experiences always involve helping someone along their path. One of the more tangible or large-scale ways I did that at Writer?s Digest was launching a recurring event called the ?Editor?s Intensives,? where we invited up to 50 writers to spend a weekend at Writer?s Digest offices with our staff to talk about the publishing industry and review their manuscripts one-on-one. I loved doing that event because of how meaningful and impactful it was?not just because writers had the opportunity to meet with professional editors, but because they met other writers and struck up lifelong friendships.
That event pretty much symbolizes what I loved about being at Writer?s Digest. I?m sad to say the event was discontinued after I left.

What do you think is the most important area a writer should be focusing on now to build their career?
Without question, a professional author website. Don?t misinterpret that as blogging. I mean a website, the hub of everything you do online, and the means by which anyone can learn about you, your books, and how to contact you.
It?s never to soon to establish a website. Why? Because there?s a learning curve, because a website is a work in progress always, because you don?t want to start a website on the day it?s supposed to produce results.
Unpublished writers think they have nothing to put on their website, and maybe that?s true, but I don?t care. Create one anyway if you?re serious about a long-term career as an author. Don?t let it become that ?thing? you put off because you don?t like dealing with technology. Get comfortable with having and cultivating an online version of who you are now.
As time passes, you?ll start to experience how powerful having a website is. Opportunities and contacts will come to you that you couldn?t have imagined. And when that starts happening, you?ll start improving and customizing your site to bring more of what you want into your career.
Do it. Start a site. It doesn?t have to be perfect. It will never be perfect anyway. But it?s your single most important marketing and advertising tool, aside from your professional partnerships/relationships.

For authors seeking traditional publishing, rejections are the hardest thing to face. Do you have any tips for dealing with rejection and improving your chances with traditional publishers?
Tips for dealing with rejection:

  • Realize it hurts like hell when it happens. Wallow for 5 minutes, no more. Get back to work.
  • Never try to parse vague rejection letters. What a waste of time and energy. If you get useful feedback, consider it a gift. Use it to improve your work. If you violently disagree with specific criticism, put it aside for a few weeks or months, then revisit it. You may find the criticism right on the money.
  • It?s imperative you not lose total confidence after rejection (no matter how long the rejection phase continues). Easier said than done, but find the coping mechanisms or rituals that work for you.
  • Whatever uncertainty plagues you is natural and part of the process. Deal with it. Continue to read and write what you love.
  • Keeping your work in circulation is one of the best cures for getting over rejection?you always have the possibility of a positive response ahead.

For improving your chances: Don?t submit your work until it?s ready. Hopefully you know yourself and your work well enough that you can honestly know when it?s time. If you really don?t know, you have nothing to lose by waiting. I really mean that, so I?ll repeat it again: You have nothing to lose by waiting.

For those authors seeking the Indie publishing route, what are your best suggestions for success in this ever-changing publishing climate?
Take the time to research options and services. (Review my 10 questions for e-publishing services.) Understand the challenges you face, especially when it comes to effective marketing and promotion. Make a choice that you can feel confident about and not regret in 6 months. Too many people are in a hurry to publish, and I?ve never met a single person who was in a hurry for a good enough reason not to feel extreme regret later.
If you?re a totally unpublished writer, spend as little as possible on your self-publishing effort, except when it comes to editorial assistance. Go electronic first; justify the print edition based on customer demand.
If you?re self-publishing an e-book, then success depends upon online marketing and promotion. Forget about print promotion, book signings, print reviews, etc. Those don?t matter. All that matters is catching the attention of people who are already active in the digital sphere. Make sure you know how you?re going to do that before pulling the trigger.

Do you have any upcoming books or events you are offering that we can look out for?
No books as of yet, but you can sign up for my e-newsletter, which focuses on tools for writers in the digital age. A list of my upcoming speaking engagements at writers conferences can be found at http://janefriedman.com/meet-me/.

(AP) ? Stephen Barton says he was bloodied from gunshot wounds as he staggered away from the hellish chaos inside a Colorado movie theater, but he didn't realize how badly he was hurt until he saw the shock in the faces of people who looked at him.

The 22-year-old from Southbury, Conn., and two friends were in the packed suburban Denver theater when a gunman opened fire just after midnight Friday. Twelve died and 58 were injured.

Speaking from his Aurora hospital bed Sunday, Barton said the shooting eventually stopped but the victims were still screaming. He remembers thinking, "This was the end for me, this will be the end of my life."

One of his friends was also injured but her condition wasn't immediately known. His other friend escaped unharmed.

Pool.com, Quintaris Confirm Market for Domain Names in New gTLDs

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (PRWEB) May 21, 2009

In the month since Pool.com and Quintaris, partners in providing business and technical support for new gTLDs, began allowing consumers to pre-order Internet domain names in likely new registries that will compete with existing ones like .com, .net or .uk, the total number ?spoken for? has averaged 10,000 per day.

There is no cost to the consumer until the name is registered.

According to Tony Farrow, head of business development at Quintaris, ?Now that ICANN has set a timeline for introduction of the new domain name registries, demand has been strong and growing.? ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the organization responsible for authorizing the use of registries. It intends the new gTLDs to be brought online in 2010.

Quintaris, a leading web business consultancy that helps acquire, manage, market and maximize registry value, partnered with Pool.com, the market leading domain name acquisition and auction services company to create the pre-order program and ?size the market.? Pre-orders can be placed at http://www.quintaris.pool.com.

Early results show a stronger market for generic-named registries, like .sport than for those being pursued by a specific city or region. Farrow noted that ?no city gTLD has cracked the top ten on the pre-order list.?

The list of likely gTLDs ? those that companies, communities and individual investors have said they intend to pursue ? has also grown, from 50 to 60, in the last 30 days. The full list, dynamically updated, is available at both http://www.Pool.com and http://www.Quintaris.com as well as the pre-order site.

Among the new domain name registries added to the pre-order list are: .vin, .radio, .sucks, .futbol and .football. The last two will offer an additional opportunity to help assess the market demand for names in multiple languages.

?This isn?t the only way the pre-order program can do more than offer the ?proof of concept? we initially sought,? Farrow said. ?It can also serve to help build the business model of anyone interested in operating a registry.?

On the basis of a simple request, Quintaris will add a gTLD to the pre-order program and help add a statistical basis to the registry operator?s business plan. The company also offers a set of Web-based marketing tools to accelerate adoption.

About Quintaris (http://www.quintaris.com):
Quintaris is a leading web business consultancy. Its 5-point approach, built on expertise earned from long-standing involvement with ICANN and proven success in the domain industry, helps companies, communities and individuals acquire, manage, market and maximize the value of registries or Top Level Domains.

The service offering includes Consulting Services, Registry Operations, Domain Name Auction Services, a Sales Channel and Marketing Support to promote brand and consumer value.

About Pool.com (http://www.pool.com):
Pool.com pioneered the use of auctions to help set market value for internet domain names, making it a leading company in both primary domain name acquisition and secondary market sales. The company offers a complete suite of related services for individuals and corporate domain name holders as well as supporting the registrars and registries that comprise the Internet?s infrastructure. Headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Pool.com is a member of the Momentous.ca family of online enterprises, providing customers with high-quality, high-value online services.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
