The Sun Devils use Rodgers' nine strikeouts, big first inning to take game one of the series

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team defeated UC Riverside 11-3 Friday night in front of 2,527 fans at Packard Stadium. ASU right-hander Brady Rodgers (2-0) struck out seven straight batters, including the side in the fifth inning, to finish with nine strikeouts and earn his second win of the season.

Senior first baseman Abe Ruiz, who fell a triple shy of the cycle, hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sun Devils (4-0) a 10-0 advantage. He finished with three hits and four RBI to lead all ASU batters.

The Sun Devils collected four runs in the bottom of the first after starting the inning with five consecutive hits. Junior infielder Joey DeMichele highlighted the scoring with a two-run triple, and junior shortstop Deven Marrero and Ruiz each drove in a run with RBI singles.

DeMichele reached base on a single in the third inning and advanced to third on a double by Ruiz before junior catcher Max Rossiter brought him home on a fielder's choice. DeMichele picked up a pair of hits and a pair of RBI in the game.

Junior outfielder Andrew Aplin scored the Devils' sole run in the fourth, taking his base on a walk and stealing second to get in position to score on a single by redshirt freshman outfielder Trever Allen.

Sophomore third baseman Michael Benjamin drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and freshman infielder Drew Stankiewicz collected an RBI on a fielders choice in the eighth.

ASU left-hander Brandon Bonilla took over in the eighth and recorded a pair of strikeouts, but gave up two runs on two hits. Right-hander Josh Dahl came in to close out the ninth and allowed one run on one hit before getting out the final three batters.

The Highlanders (2-3) got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning with two walks and a pair of RBI singles by junior infielder Eddie Young and junior catcher Clayton Prestridge. They scored again in the ninth on a fielders choice by pinch-hitter Bart Steponovich to finish the game with three runs on eight hits.

UC Riverside left-hander Dylan Stuart (1-1) took the loss after allowing six earned runs and 11 hits in 5.2 innings. He finished with one strikeout and two walks.

The Sun Devils continue their three-game series against UC Riverside on Saturday at Packard Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
