The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas, with offices in Austin and Houston, seeks a full-time, permanent Paralegal.

The ACLU works to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and state and federal civil rights laws. The ACLU legal team litigates a broad range of constitutional cases in state and federal courts, including, but not limited to, free speech, freedom of religion, lesbian and gay rights, reproductive freedom, criminal justice, prison and jail conditions of confinement, immigrants? rights, and privacy rights. An affiliate of the national ACLU, the state affiliate has members in every city in Texas and engages with all levels of government.

Summary of Position

The ACLU of Texas is seeking a full-time Paralegal to assist its attorneys with civil rights and civil liberties litigation. The Paralegal will work under the direction of the Legal Director and support a Staff Attorney and a Senior Staff Attorney.? The Paralegal will be based in the ACLU?s Houston office, but travel within Texas will be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage intake process, including coordinating monthly intake review and data entry;
  • Assist in case development, including factual research, legal research, interviews, information gathering and analysis;
  • Assist in case management, including maintenance of client relationships and electronic files;
  • Perform general paralegal work, including preparing documents for filing in court, cite-checking, and using PACER and Westlaw;
  • Manage billing software and track expenses;
  • Coordinate legal volunteers, including cooperating attorneys, State Legal Panel members, and law interns;
  • Prepare reports; and
  • Perform administrative tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor?s Degree;
  • Fully bilingual English-Spanish;
  • Paralegal experience required, with federal court filing experience strongly preferred;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with strong interpersonal aptitude;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and multi-task under pressure and without sacrificing attention to detail;
  • Willingness to travel within Texas;
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary;
  • Familiarity with PACER, Westlaw, Timeslips and Filemaker strongly? preferred; and,
  • Familiarity or experience with civil rights and civil liberties issues preferred.

Compensation:

Salary range is based on experience consistent with the ACLU?s salary scale and is commensurate to other public interest law firms in the area. The ACLU provides excellent benefits including health insurance and a 401(k) plan.
